I posted this in the fuel economy thread but I wanted to post it here as well.

Just thought ide share something with you all that i came to realise the other day. Kind of like an epiphany you could say  well I was driving my truck up to Moree to visit some mates last weekend and couldnt figure out why when a sign on the side of the road said 'x' number of k's to go till the next town that my trip computer was always off.

I then proceeded to plug my chip it obdII reader into the car and found out that even though i have regeared my truck to suit the 33's and have a speedo corrector that makes it reads perfectly spot on the the kay, the trip computer and im assuming odometer still goes straight off the gearbox sensor which was still reading 6km/h slow. So in actual fact while my speedo reads exactly the speed im doing (calibrated and tested using 3 seperate gps units at once when installed) the car itself still reads slow.

So what does all this mean? Well for every 100 k's I travel in the car, i need to add an extra 6 k's onto the trip computer and hence my fuel consumption calculations as well. Seeing as though I just had a long range tank fitted just before i left its a bit hard to use the old tank figures but I was able to go 1250k's on 130L. Which works out at 10.4 L/100 (calculated not with the computer obviously) which im very happy with seeing as though I was carrying 4 people in the car and a canopy full of luggage.

This comes just after changing my injectors to the new DLC ones as well so I was not able to get the correct adjusted calculations from the old ones. With how modified and how heavy my truck is Im stoked with that figure.

Has anyone else with 33's and a speedo corrector encounted the same thing? I suggest having a look because you might find your truck is getting better economy than you think.

How does your speed correcter work then? I took the signal from my gearbox through the speed corrector and back to the system. This way everything is 100% correct, calibrated to 3 GPS's readings

Yeah mine takes from the factory gearbox sensor as well but it all depends how far along that sensor you tap in so to speak. behind the instrument cluster is after the odo takes the signal ide assume

Not if you tap into that signal wire before the actual odometer itself...from memory its a pink and brown wire.

Yeah I just followed the instructions on the unit so I can't remember exactly which wire I tapped into. But even if you did get the odo adjusted as well the difference between the speed needle and the odo reading wouldn't change. Just the whole adjustment value would. So your still going to have errors in the odo reading.

Nope I disagree. The signal from the gearbox is a pulsed signal according to the speed. Faster = more pulses. You break this signal and feed it into the speed corrector which multiply or divide these pulses to give either more or less pulses. From the output of your correction unit, the signal to the ECU is connected. (the broken wire) so your combination meter (ECU) does not know what the real speed is . . . only what the speed corrector is telling it what the speed is. It works like an electronic gearbox to your system. This way you can calibrate it 100% accurate.
But, and I have had this before. The actual speed indicator needle and the km indication is not correct. This is an internal instrument error and need to be factory or specialized calibrated to be rectified. The ECU only has a single input for the pulsed signal.

But if the odo gets its pulse before you tap into it and change it for the speedo then you can have two different readings?

Mine is 10% out on the speedo... 100 is actually 110klm
ODO is 14% out... so if I do 100 klms of hwy driving, the GPS will ready 114klms ...

I dont run any correction and havent regeared though...

So if you corrected your speedo to read correct then you will only be 4kms out? Mines 6kms out. Ill have to check it again with a gps trip function. That will tell for sure

Try to use long straight roads like highways as GPS calculates point to point over XX time intervals depending on unit... so corner can affect it. Albury to Melb on the Hume is perfect...

In the last week I had a regular service done by my mate mechanic and I got him to clean my intake and my egr valve. All i can say is OH MY GOD!! After a dozen phone calls from my mate saying how baffled he was about how dirty my intake was he then began to explain that on my intake head itself my number 4 cylinder only had about a 10mm hole that was not blocked  :o

He took a good 7 hours pulling it apart and cleaning it but now i must say the truck is alot more responsive and once the ecu relearns the fuel trims I have no doubt the power and fuel consumtion will get better and better but first signs are very positive. All i can say is if you havent cleaned yours..... DO IT. Well worth the knowledge that your engine is getting the clean air it needs.

Ps ive ordered the chip it egr blocking plate and once it arrives ill be throwing that straight in as well as pulling the vacuum lines on the egr valve itself. Wont be letting me intake system get like that again.

Have a few new pics and updates to report on but ill save them for tomorrow night :D

Mine is just about to hit that and I doubt it's ever been done. 7 hours of work by a qualified mechanic equals about a week for me to pull down clean and reassemble...

Mate judging by a few guys on here that have been a bit hit and miss with cleaning theres out (ie some being bad and some being ok) i was a bit hesitant paying my mechanic (even though its mates rates) to do it but im sure glad i did. He had to soak my inlet manifold in an acid bath and wash it 3 times before chiselling the rest of the build up out with a screwdriver to get it clean. he rekons on the number 4 cylinder the air intake was completely blocked other than a 10mm hole !! Engine is much more responsive now and while i probably havent gained alot of top end power I can honestly say Ive got at least......... 30-40% more low down torque back.
Well worth doing but im making sure it doesnt happen again with this chip it block thing and pulling the vacuum lines on the valve. Ill let you know how it goes once they are done.
I am blowing alot more black smoke now though as theres the correct amount of egr going through the engine. Amazes me how much crap was getting stuck and not coming out the back

Hey Mate awesome truck, just red through your entire build..

Did you ever get to putting those new pics up??? I live in Newy but work in WA and dont spend much time working on my truck (bad for a mechanic) but have told the boss (wife) that im spending a couple of days working on it (service, machine front disc, replacing rear brake shoe's, auto tranny service) and was weighing up if i should clean the intake out but will do it for sure after reading your post..

great work once agian on a very nice truck 8-)
