just an update on my new HILUX - finally got it!

Postby Hilux Max on Sat, 28 Jul 2007 4:18 +0000

Yeah, just got back from Bob Jane t-marts and showed the rep there my wheel and tyre combo and asked him what I can do. I said I needed a rim with an offset that'll move the rim inside the guards by 20mm.

He checked his computer and told me the hilux 4x4's have a factory offset of +45 (i thought it was +30, anyway)

He recommend me putting on a patrol rim with a +10 offset to pull it in .

If I manage to get it inwards by 20mm, then that would also move it that little bit that is required off the chassis/bodymount at the rear of the front guard.

Ive heard of people running 285's from ATS saying they run a -12 offset and still need trimming.

Its confusing the hell out of me but I might just give the patrol rims a shot next week and get a set of black sunnies - just to see if it works.

Hopefully others can learn from my pitiful experiences. :(

Looks like a fine line, I believe the Hilux is +30 and with these it'll hit the upper control arm with 285/75 x16. Formud has -12 and in his profile shows modification where it was hitting in your description. I posted a link which tells you what the different offsets mean you should read it. The more positive you have it the closer to the motor it goes and the other way the opposite. Just move the whole engine and crossmember forward.

If toyota didnt put that chassis/body mount there we wouldnt be having such a problem. If only it was half an inch further back...if only.

Spoke to Rob, before (suspension bloke), and he reckons with the lift the top of the tyre is sticking further out than it should be 6 to 7mm.

Along with that he also says based on other hilux's he's done that the castor can move the wheel forward 5 or 6 mm.

If that's the case, and hopefully I find out on Sunday, then itmight just be enough to clear that chassis mount on full lock.

Check the following pic's I took before -

You can sorta see in the first pic the trimming I did.
Coudl go that little bit more if necessary but it wont really help because the mount is the problem, as you said Formud had the same issue.

The second pick, take into account that the flares are 50mm wide whe fitted, and if the wheel alignment does in fact pull the top of the tyre inwards, then the flare would be "just" about covering the tread with the sidewall of the tyre sticking out.

Heres another pic of the tyre sticking out -

So, Ive decided to hold off on the wheel/tyre sale and will wait till I see the results from the wheel alignment.

Maate, what headaches.......:o

I'm confused,

your rims have a -5 offset. The standard is about +30 and you are having these problems and yet there other guys with 16x8 rims on this forum that have dick cepek, pro comp etc that have -11 mm offsets.
Shouldnt you be having less problems than them..............maybe it is your tyre choice that is giving you grief or your rim is a lot more than the -5 they told you ????
On the internet you can be anything you want. It is strange that so many people choose to be stupid!

I checked the rim out and it is a -5. going by the maxxis website, the overall width of the tyre is 11.7".

Thats not the tread width, the overall width from sidewall to sidewall.

Im assuming maybe this tyre is slightly wider than the average 285?
like I said previously, Im gonna hold me breath till I get an alignment done and we can move forward from there.

The ones with the -11 offset you speak off, are they running 265's or 285's?

I know Formud has a -12 offset and is running 285's thou he got the grinder onto his chassis/body mount and i'd rather not do that. (thou I did hit it with the skledgey a little)

I had 285/75 x16 BFG AT's on the standard offset rim, with no trouble, apart from a small rub at full lock on the front sway bar but nothing that couldn't be fixed with a touch of the 9" that was with the 3.5 inch lift.

Did something change from later 2005 to 2007????

got the flares fitted tuesday by Opposite Lock, pricks didnt tell me that the flares dont come for the front bumper!

I was going to wait a couple of weeks before chasing up a bullbar, but now sorta have to get one sooner, coz it looks bit funny.

Heres some pics, they were taken late last night so not the best picture quality by you get the picture-

What dou you guys think of the Ironman bullbars?

hey guys,

The clearance issue has been pretty much sorted. Got no problems with everyday driving, hitting round abouts and going up driveways with full steering lock or speed humps.

"occasionally" she'll rub when on the front left side on the plastic inner guard liner behind the bumper, but that dont concern me coz that'll disappear once I put a bullbar on.

Those pictures above weren't too good, here's a better one I took at work today -

What a difference flares make huh? These one are slightly different to the SR5 ones. to me they seem to be slightly taller and slightly wider. gotta get a ruler out and measure.

anyway, thanks for your comments

MMaaxx,
I have some sr5 flares for the front bar if you want. They are white and in Qld.

It depends on how long till you get a bull bar.

pm. me if you want them. I can send you some photo's if you need.

Regards,
Camwill69

Ps Stu-k lux is the same colour as yours (I think) and he just got a bar. Don't know if he kept it.

Thanks fellas,The hilux is an 07 model....3 weeks old today to be precise. In a way, I reckon she'd look good with the front piece of flare and no bullbar, but I need the bullbar for that little bit more clearance on the front.Anyway, I fitted the TJM F.U.G today. The Front Under-Body Guard and Transmission Guard.Heres pics-

What offset are the Prado wheels.

How did you go with rear two bolts of the transmission guard I found the instructions not quite right, but still managed to put them in, just a bit fiddly.

The Prado wheels are +30 offset

Yeah the rear two bolts were bit fiddly. I found that the long wire attached to the flat nuts was too long and I shortened it by a couple inches, just enough so you can reach it through that crossmember. That way I was able to get it to sit flat and get the bolt through to it. Good product thou.

How is yours after going offroad Doug?

Have you bottomed out on it yet?

I like how it sits pretty flat. Heaps better than the stock bash plate

Hey guys,
Me again,

Just an update on me hilux, I ditched the "BLING" rims and went for "BLACK" sunnies.

Going offroading next weekend and was worried about damaging the "bling", so got them instead.

They are 16x8 and "0" offset, so they pull the tyre inwards by 5mm on before.

Tyre shop said that it was the only offset available for the new hilux in a sunraysia in 16x8.

I asked the bloke, what about a patrol sunraysia, should they bolt up the same, and he reckons they wouldnt.
anyway, heres a pic of her now -

Picked up a Black ARB Winchbar the other day and all going well, and if I can find some extra hands, I'll be fitting it up this weekend.

Has anybody else fitted the ARB bars to their hilux's by themselves? any pointers?

Heres a couple of pics I took the other day next to me mates 5" lifted hilux, he just lifted the rear a tad more to give it the arse up stance that he wanted-

Hopefully I'll update more pics by weekends end and some offroading ones the following weekend.

By the way, If the rim tyre combo doesnt work offroad and give me too many problems, I'll put up with it until they wear out and then I'll put next time a set of 255/85x16 Bighorn's.
