One young fella who works for me paid far to much for a nice white SR5 '06 Hilux. It's got the V6 with auto and an alloy bullbar and rollbar. I still can't understand why he wanted a 2WD but he reckons he's going to stick with it for now. First order of business is to lift the pathetically low front end. It keeps hitting the ground and is going to cause him real grief if it continues. I suggested the long travel Chaos Fab kit designed for the Tacoma that a mate has installed in his 2WD but it's out of his budget. Instead I've ordered a pair of heavy duty raised height King coils and when we fit them I'll get a chance to see how the shocks are.
Does anyone have any recommendations for replacement 2WD front struts?
While the struts are out, I'll cycle the suspension to determine the maximum tyre we can fit underneath.

Not sure about the front struts, i heard someone say something that they may come as a whole unit, spring/strut/ etc etc.

What i do know is that you can fit a 255/40R 20" under a 4x2 without worrying about clearances, i also had ample room under the guards without the 20" rims looking too small.

What I'm getting at is, if he is hitting things in his 2WD, cut his losses and get the 4x4 or revise his driving style lol.

I have a 2WD one at work and I've never bottomed out on anything, going everywhere a 2WD one should go.

My thoughts exactly jap. This young bloke is over-committed on the vehicle so I guess he's stuck with it. I tried to convince him to get out it and buy an older 4WD but he owes way more than it's worth. Put it down to youthful inexperience.

I haven't had anything to do with 2WD Hilux's (or 2WD anything much) but this thing is very low in the front. So low that I suspect the springs have sagged (or collapsed) and on our gravel roads will soon end in disaster.

The plan is to get it up out of the gravel and water while staying within a meagre budget. First step is the raised Kings Springs which turned up yesterday, and then perhaps strut spacers if we don't run out of camber adjustment. Then a 2" body lift and see if we can squeeze under a set of 30 or 31" tyres.

He should be back from town shortly and be keen to start so I'll get some before and after pics of the difference the springs make.

if you can get enough lift in the front what about a sprung over conversion in the rear? make it a real trophy truck....

X2 Bull....

4x2's are sprung under, springing them over will gain 2-2.5 good inches in rear height.

I wouldnt recommend the strut spacer, go a longer strut up front, you dont have CV's to worry bout so jack it a good 3" mate!

that will suit the rear nicely.

Id reccomend some aftermarket bumpstops on the front end aswell mate.....a wider offset wheel because he'll need the benefit of a wider stance/stability especially with the tail happiness of a 2WD and try and keep it as low as you need (i..e bodylift is overkill if your gonna raise suspension aswell just for 31" tyres)

The rear is already pretty high, wait until you see the pics, looks like a top fueler :lol:

So we'll see how high the front ends up before it runs out of caster adjustment and then adjust the rear to suit. The rear is easy. Actually it's all pretty easy.
Longer struts and hyd bumps would be great and I've got him all excited about the Total Chaos long travel front end kit for the Tacoma (which bolts straight on to the 2WD Hilux BTW) but a bit out of reach of this kid.

So Max, you reckon 31"s will fit?
Just remember with a suspension lift, unless you space down the bumpstops like you did, the "full bump" position hasn't changed, you've just raised the ride height. Therefore if 31's" fit with a suspension lift, they'd fit now. A lot of people make this mistake. If you're tyres touch anywhere at full bump on full lock then.... :oops:
