Custom Swingaway project.

In the process of building a some swingaway arms to fit onto my Formula Offroad rear protection towbar.
I begged and pleaded with Kaymar to sell me the arms from one of there 80 series landcruser to save me some of the hassle but was quoted a $1000 a side.... :o :o
Started off buying a trailer axle. For $100. I could have bought two stub axles for $70 each but figured I could save bit of money any just cut the complete axle to the length that I needed.
Image
After the axle was cut to length I measured the holes and drilled them using my milling machine. Got the spacing spot on.
Image
Using U bolts I have managed to work out a way to secure the post to the rear protection bar.
Image
Will be counter boring the holes and extending the thread on the U bolt to have the nuts recessed into the axle. Hopefully I can find some sort of rubber plug to cover the hole so it looks nice and neat.
The next step is to copy and machine a hub to accept the bearings onto the post.
Cheers
Skog

Thanks Jamie.
Still havent washed it yet.
Did find a problem with the exhaust. Bent it on that last forum trip up to Clarence and it was rubbing against the rear shackle. Im hoping (finger xed) that this vibration loosened all the soot inside the exhaust and has made it spew out along with the fuel filter change this should sort it out...... The black soot has actually stained the paintwork as well..... Might have to paint the tub black like yours if i doesnt sort it self out... :) :) :)
Cheers

Ahh so someone has got a start. Good to see mate. I will be drawing on your experiences later this year. I've just got to practice up my welding.

Mark,

Looks good mate.

You don't need to machine the hubs as you can buy the bare hub to match your axles for about $25 from memory. I'll have to go through some emails to Max at home to find the details of where to get them. I also located some good latches as well for swing away carriers. Best ones come out of Brisbane.

I spent a fair bit of time searching this stuf as I was thinkiong of doing something similar on my ARB rear step bar (which Dave has had modified by K&N, check his profile).

I know you could machine them on your ear though...

Have some ideas for the ARB bar as well Mc and Rod. An adaptor plate could be made to accept a stub axle quite easily.

I was actually looking at getting a round stub axle and drilling out the tube on the ARB bar then bracing that back to the chassis support bracket.

Yours would be fully removable by the looks mark, is that the plan??

The stub axles would remain fixed on both sides at all times. The swingaways are removable and would only be used for touring, trips etc. The swingaways would have LED lights on them and plug directly into the trailer plug like you suggested Mc.
My idea for the Arb bar is.
If you ran a square stub axle drilled and tapped and welded a U Shackle to the ARB bar you could bolt the stub axle directly to the bar. That was my idea for the ARB unit. It wouldnt compromise the stength of the bar either.

Mark,

Not quite what I was looking for but these are pretty cheap at $20
http://www.allstatestrailerspares.com.a ... a06bac1460

it would be easy for you to trim this down on the lathe. These would be good to trim down and weld onto an ARB step bar and mount the stub axle on the gate.

The ones I was thinking of were a tube machined for the stub axle, and am pretty sure they were on this link
http://www.trailerwarehouse.com.au/

might pay giving them a call, I can't find it again today.

Thanks for the info Rod. That first link showing that hub wont work mate. That hub is cast iron and you can't weld it to steel. (Well you can but its not easy). I bought a hub today, am going to rob it for its bearings and also get the dimensions for the bearing cup diametres and distances so I can turn them up out of steel. Knowing that a few are interested will turn up five or so for everyone. Will post some more pics up later on tonight.

Had to extend the threads on the U bolts as they werent long enough. Had a 1/2" BSW dienut in the shop so I just wound it down to the right length. Bit disapponited in this the threads always turn out like shit using dienuts. Didnt have an option though normally I'd use the lathe to extend threads on bolts. :(
Image
As it turns out I didnt have a counterbore big enough to sink the nuts into the stubaxle. So I chose to remove all the material and make a stainless plate to cover the bolts at a later date.
Image
Here it is bolted into position. Will be able to make adjustments later on and move the bracket into the right position. Then once Im happy will also weld it to the bar.
Image
And the hub put on.
Image
Wont be able to do anymore to it until next week.
Cheers

Whoops Mark, I am too late

On this thread, a yank bought the bare hubs from an Australian store
http://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/ ... woooh.html

See

http://www.trailerparts.net.au/
Go to the shop, from the menu choose "hub complete" then "hubs" then scroll down till you find "C0131 - Hub : Steel-noflange :std".

Tyre carrier Latches

From here in brissy http://www.elesa-ganter.com
Sorry I had a link to a PDF file that has died but look for Hook, toggle and power clamps

Thanks for that Link Rod.
The Elesa+Ganter was just added to my favouries in my browser. We used to use alot of there gear to hold castings in jigs for machining. Bloody good gear they quick release with minimal force and the lockdown force is pretty surprising as well. I'd completely forgotten about them. Much appreciated for that.
I'll turn up my own blank hub Ive got a few bit of old leftover offcuts that can be used. Was also going to chop up what was left of the axle and turn up some more stub axles. I know Wade and McSumWay wanted to make swingaways as well so they could possibly use them or if anyone else want to have an attempt at making a swingaway let me know.

Well the project is back into swing.
Measured up the Stub axle and doner hub.

Ordered the the blanks this morning.
Image
Rough drilling.
Image
Finish bore bearing size machining.
Image
Rough flat milling for swing away arm.
Image
Finish milling.
Image
Aligning the outward stop. To stop the swingaway hitting the tub.
Image
Never chuck any old steel away. This frame is an old project that never got off the ground.
Matches prefectly and could get two frames out of it....
