5" down, 2" forward, 1.25" radially outboard from the hinge point and approximately 10 degrees less rake.... "the quest for clearance" against that canopy window has begun..... And a full 180 degrees of swing achieved without the 32"tyre hitting the tub.
The old "test position"

The new position........

I'm impressed with your attention to detail Mark. Being able to analyse the results and willing to change/redesign to get the optimum result is the only way to go. Well done.
I reckon the next project should be a rocket launcher attachment on the bullbar with swivel chair and armour shield. Probably need axle stubs off a Kenworth or similar and a slight upgrade to the front springs (probably bugger-up warranty though). ;) ;)
P.S. Don't fret about the comments about the table cloth; they're all just jealous and are quite possibly frocking-up in the privacy of their own garages.

Rocket launcher sure sounds good though... not sure you'll get a engineers cert for it though..

Thanks Brookster....
Will be starting a new project soon with the Rhino Racks on the roof. Will be using one of those remote control spot lights from Avenger as a base and I'll mount a Minigun on it. You've seen Predator havent you??? Its the machine gun that he cuts the forest down with......Theres another one shown in Black Hawk Down where the straffe the roofs using Apache helicopters...
No cop or RTA inspector would ever dare come near me.   If they did they would be confronted with a wall of lead......
No engineering ticket required..
Will be hoping to fit Radar seeking missiles to solve the speeding ticket problems as well but with all these new accessories fitted my truack would have the aerodynamics of a well greased brick.. Top speed about 60 kph... Would look pretty cool though.. 8-) 8-) 8-)

Skog,
I've done it again haven't I? Sorry to bastardise your excellent thread. I suppose I'm a bit envious of the various projects you blokes are getting your teeth into. I plan to do stuff to my Hilux one day when I have spare time and funds. Being self-employed means I often have neither. Oh well....I can but dream; and offer creative yet insane build project suggestions to others when bored.

Think I may have found a latch... Finally....lol
The Elesa and Ganter gear was nice but was out of the ball park in price. The lock that I really liked was $600. If I bought two the pricing was the same $600 if I bought 4 was $700. Dont understand there pricing??? The Elesa and Ganter one that I did like actually had a lockdown force of 14000N approximately 1.4 tonne.. ;)
Found some othere suppliers though on the Ovesco site via explorOZ. ( Thanks Alby. :) )
Here is a lock that they sell as a stock item.
Image
And its dimensions.
Image
At $57 a pop much more competive in price compared to $600 for the same thing from Elesa. This is a weld on item as well not a drill and tap job so should be a bit easier to instal.
Anyway my swingaway had its first incident, been using a G clamp to hold it on in position. Well some idiot (aka Skog07) forgot to secure it and went for a drive. Well the result was a swingaway that swang away...... Dented the tub fell of its temporary U bolt mounts and made an arse out of myself infront of a customer...lol
To be honest I am glad to incorporate into this design its removability. I am constanly opening and shutting the back canopy window and do need to get into the tub constantly for work so once I have it sorted it will be removed and only used for 4wding trips.
Cheers

Sorry mate, I should have told you about that one as well. When I priced the Elser and Ganter one it was much more reaonable, they must have changed their pricng policy. Thay ha dthe identical latch that used to be use donthe US based swingaway kits.

Interesting feedback about the nuisance factor of the swing away. Thats one reason why I added a Rhino roof mounted carrier.

No need to apologise Rod. Really appreciate your help.
The Elesa Gear is really nice and have used it before. Just couldnt find someone else to wear the cost.... hehehe.
Found a few others as well you can get toggle locks from O'Brien Aluminum for $18 each.
Due to the huge offset of my design and wanting a full 180 degree swing on a 32 inch tyre I have run into a few design problems.... But im pretty sure that I can sort it out...
A Toyota Prado steel rim is bloody heavy at best then to throw a 32" MTZ on it, then throw in a huge amount of corregations to get to the Cape.
My design will need a locating dowel to transfer the torque into the middle of the towbar.
There was an interesting thread on explorOZ that I found that actually mentions that you can get a very similar item to the Kaymar lock down toggle lock from a HJ45 cruiser.
Rod I agree

The swingaway is a bit of a PITA as a daily vehicle to be honest, its a prototype and will dare say visit the cutting room floor again... :) :)

Well guess its time to pull the finger out...
Finally ordered the Ovesco over centre clamps.. At 5pm yesterday afternoon.. They arrived this morning in the post..
Not bad.. from Brisbane....
$57 each....
Image
I bought two... So will also do a jerry can holder on the left hand side eventually as well...
Or McSumway will use it for his when he gets around to make his.. :)
Got to fire up the Tig and get this happening before Cape York... Sick of using the G clamp to hold it in place...

Its nearly finished.... Well. Its the best I will get it before I shoot off to the Cape on Thursday.
Here is the location of the Ovesco clamp and how it is welded onto the post and swingaway.
Image
Image
The ratchet stop. I have drilled the hub to lock the swingaway into two postions half open and fully open.
Image
Half open position.
Image
Fully open position.
Image
As you can see I have made a fabricated up a piece of plywood to incorporate a table into the swingaway.
Image
Will make a more permanent solution when I get back but like the ability to also use it as a table for mounting a stove etc on it. Gives a larger area to work with on the back of the ute... Also gets the stove away from the inside of the canopy.
Cheers
