Re: Drews Build Long travel kit ???

Postby Drew on Wed, 02 Jun 2010 2:43 +0000

Ok so while others are going the sas im going to go a different track....
My plan is to keep the lux IFS  However I want to end up with a longtravel setup like the tacoma's in the states.
Eventualy it should have new LCA's maybe a diff drop bracket kit etc etc etc along with prado brakes and a few other bits just dont tell the mrs !!!! she thinks its finished hahahaha

So I'm wanting to open abit of discusion on this as hopfully it will help me make my mind up on products, parts and also get a few idears off you guys as to what others have done and setups etc you have seen, know about etc. so if you find anything let me know !!!!

The first upgrade will be the cv's. These are a few im looking at. I really like the rcv performance set up as it has a completly new inner joint and will allow for the travel im looking for. However i have to send a replacement set to the US. I have a spare set of stock after market cv's brand new that i got for $70 that i could send over and see if they will take them. The other option is getting the coating / rebuild that yuri 4x4 do on my stock toyota ones, this was the plan and why i bought the spares, so i could put the cheapys in while i sent the toyota ones away. Option 3 is a bigger replacement set like monster rides is looking into and then maybe doing the yuri coating / rebuild to them....

GHG how did you go with your new cv's?

RCV Performance

"RCV Performance has completely redesigned the inboard joint replacing the fragile factory set-up. The RCV Performance Ultimate Tacoma inboard joint allows for more articulation on lifted Tacoma's. The billet aerospace alloy center bar is heat treated for maximum strength and torsional flexing. The OEM outboard is beefed up with chromoly internals. All sales are done on an exchange basis. An OEM axle with a usable outboard joint must be sent in for this upgrade. The outboard joint itself is pretty stout and to keep the cost down it is rebuilt with upgrades internal components by one of our factory trained technicians. All RCV components guaranteed against breakage and 100% customer satisfaction guaranteed or your money back."

"Drive it Hard!!! Save money, and increase your chances of making it through tough tracks or rock-crawling competitions without breaking CV's - especially when wheeling large tyres.
Hi Tensile 4140 machined rings* welded to specially prepped and heat-treated Birfield cores using special rods. Increases strength at full lock. They look great too, with a smooth, polished finish.
Tested in competition with 42" tyres"
"I have been more than happy with the treated and reinforced CVs from Yuri4x4 for my IFS Toyota Surf. I had broken 6 CVs before getting the treated CVs and am yet to break one Yuri4x4 CV. I have since installed a V8 in the Surf and am still yet to break a CV. The service from Damien at Yuri4x4 has been fantastic and I am amazed at his willingness to help.
I have had Yuri4x4 CVs installed in my vehicle for 6 months now and the vehicle is driven offroad at least twice a month. Most trips seem to be a never-ending search for the weak points in the vehicle but now the CVs appear to be crossed off the list. The latest problem I have had was tearing the front diff mounts off the crossmember!!"

Monster RIdes

"Hey Fellas,
We have just about sorted some new CV's for the Hilux... much stronger and with better flex.
The specs on the CV's we will offer:
1.5 mm heavier shaft
15 mm extra extension at the CV... which equates to about 4" extra travel at the wheel.
Outside cup is 10mm bigger... making CV cup wall heavier."

The eye bolts wer expensive because they are rhino rack genuine bolts but they are worth it i think for their strength and they double as tie down points.

Man you didnt actuall buy genunin ryno ones did you.....   :o :o :o

Thoes tie down eye bolts are like $3.50 each from any nut and bolt shop. This may help for next time you need some......

I saw you car in the 4WD action this month but only a little pic. Ill have to get the custom ute one to check out my handy idea LOL.

Good job.

Drew... I'd be more than happy to help you with this IFS set up you are chasing.
Our relationship with Wyatt from RST will help source the stuff you are after.

The RCV CV's are awesome. Not sure on a landed price here, but I can check for you through Wyatt.

While I don't claim the MR CV's would be as good... we would give them a fair run for their money.

Yuri make good stuff as well.... argh the decisions!

Let me know if want some help with this build, more than happy to offer you any assistance we can.

PM Sent as well.

Cheers

Drew,

nothing wrong with a tuff IFS setup.....I know of a few in the states that run 35's and 37's damn hard......it can be done and our front ends with a little work and using your head when wheeling can handle the bigger rubber......biggest problem is making it fit.

Your best bet if you want to go long travel is to go the medium travel kit from all-pro....its the kit the Freeze runs on his Tacoma...check out his build in the members section. He just put 35's on his truck too.

Hey Drew,

If you wait just a few more months Total Chaos will be releasing their LCA 2" extension kit.

The delays they are having is finding a way to fix the rim offset. Pat the CEO has designed the kit to run a 265 with monster amounts of travel but he knows that most people who buy the kit will try and throw a big set of rubber on them making most tire combinations stick out way too far. Good news is that they are working on a glass fender kit for the hilux but to have it shipped here will be exorbitantly expensive.

As for my CV's cant complain. They are noiser then the original set but feel strong. Under turning situations or angling up a slope you can hear them click just a little bit but this is more of a result of the LCA's now sitting on the bumpstops almost all the time which is turnign into a noisy affair.

When I have the time on the holidays I will go back to Kings and get the front end rised an inch or two to where it was at first fitment.

the cv's are sitting dead level in what would amount to stock height with the cradle attche. With some lift back in it the cv's should sit a little more comfortably.

PM me your email and ill forward the details on from the owner of Total Chaos for you to get in touch with.

Just a bit of a note on the egt guage i installed. The temps have been verry good, sits arround 380 - 400 deg C on the highway 100 - 130kmh. On the beach low range 2nd - 3rd gear lots of load on the motor it peaked at 547 deg c but that was breifly, i was watching it and dint see it but thats the peak it recorded.

Today i watched it while nailing it up thru the gears, at about 3500rp it peaked at 540 deg c but for less than a second but the supprise was at 3500rpm in 3rd 656 deg c. Now that is VERY high for a post turbo sensor but again it would have been for less than a second, it jumped up to that very quick and dropped back to 380 deg c on gear change or backing off. A very high spike so i tried again and got the same result. Im not worried about it as it was so quick, but just a bit of info...

Hmmn this is actualy turning into a bit of a worry. While driving the 3hrs out to work today i was watching the egt guage and every gear arround 3000rpm was over 550 deg c...... now its cooled off up here ambient temp of only 22 deg c but my fuel consuption has blown out to almost 12L per 100km from the usual 10.1 - 10.3..... I have suspected for a hile my stienbauer might not be working correctly and the ute is due for a service.. any other idears ?

something can't be right if its getting that high. either too much fuel or not enough air. going by your fuel consuption it seems to be to much fuel. unplug the stienbauer and see what you get stock. might atleast give you an idea if thats causing the problem. I only run 31inch tires and with the VMN chip highest I got was 550 going up a long steep hill at 110km but accerating from 80 to 110km. it was gonna go higher but I backed off.

Normally I be lucky to see 500

Yeh its only doing it at high revs.... if i load the motor up like that its still fine. I have suspected that the stienbauer has been cutting in and out for a while. Just need to find somewhere here to test it. There is one place in town here that have a dyno and do them but they charge way too much for dyno time and have herd so many bad reports on them killing engines that i dont want them to touch it......

Well a bit more info on the egt scene..... the 3hr drive home from site today, disconnected the chip, loss of power ofcourse but i used 11L per 100km wich is 1L less than the trip out with the chip but i normaly get 10L per 100km with the chip. The egts only went over 500deg c in 4th gear 4000rpm at 150kph. Get home plug the chip back in and wow the power is back but again 2nd 3rd 4th all over 500 deg and 3rd and 4th over 600deg c. 4th was worrying as it held the temp for about 2-3 seconds before the revs ran out and back down again too 350deg c......... Now it has only started doing this in the last week or so...

Perfect!
They do sit out a fair bit huh but the flexi flares make up for it well. I'll have to re assess what I'm going to do, maybe fit some flexi's and see what it looks like on my silver paint. Found that you can buy flexi flare's from Clark Rubber for about $5 a meter instead of $90 or so at the 4x4 shop! Bargain!

hey drew,

i missed the boat a little but just wondering when you did you cvs back in the photo shoot i just had one question relating back to the total chaos front end, one of thier selling points is that thier kit was designed to return cv angles back closer to stock , i know that it is also a good selling point of the ultimate suspension smart lift , would you agree that getting the cvs back to near factory angles is not as important maybe and changing out the cvs for a stonger unit? i know your saying that your situation was a bit on the "extreme circumstances" but surely with the reduced angles they shouldn't of broken that easily imho! any thoughts, do you think if you had the smart lift fitted in the same situation you would of had the same outcome?
