THE GT: Tazs Built not bought KUN26R Offroad Tourer

Postby TazziesGT on Wed, 18 Sep 2019 1:35 +0000

Good afternoon,

Over the last couple of years I have built up a near on standard KUN26R Hilux, all at home in the shed.

Figured you guys may be able to grab a few ideas etc (I have grabbed plenty off this forum haha)

To start with, the GT in its original state:

From there, I Lifted the vehicle 3 inches, fitted adjustable UCA's and a diff drop kit to fix the front end geometry and fitted 265 x 75 R16's on GU Patrol ute rims.

I then lowered the tray, and removed the tank under it.

This required me to fit Kut Snake ute flares, and I made some rear rubber ones using a TJM rubber flare kit and some checker plate to make rear mud guards.

I also fitted a set of Lightforce 240 Blitz driving lights and a snorkel, as well as an Ironman winch bar.

I then went through the vehicle to make it mechanically sound so I can start chasing some horsepower haha

All new ball joints, Uni's, pinion seals, new upgraded CV's, new clutch, new intercooler.

Then went ahead and fitted a 3" Exhaust & DP Chip.

Couldn't be happier, fuel economy stayed the same (Terrible) but the power is amazing!!!

OK, The home made canopy Build!!!

I decided to go steel frame with alloy sheet for two reasons,

1) I have seen far too many alloy canopies crack when hanging spares etc

2) The cost

We built the original frame over a couple of beers.

Took the canopy off the ute, sanded and primed the frame.

Come up pretty good!

Next step sheeting!!

Sheeted the canopy, leaving an internal cavity between the dog box and canopy for the electrics.

A few key points I wanted to make sure of when designing my canopy:

1) I didn't want the doors to open higher than the top of my canopy, so that they don't foul on the awning/roof top.

2) The plan had to allow for a foxwing awning in the future.

3) Dog box directly behind cab because the bull dust is terrible up here.

Next step was I Mounted the canopy on the ute.

Fitted the Redarc DCDC Charger
USB Ports
12V Accessory Ports
LED Lighting
Engel fridge
2 x Batteries
Kings 2 x 3M awning
Kings Tourer Rooftop tent

So a few key problems were noticed at this point when fully loaded for camping:

1) The dog box wasn't finished so the dogs couldn't come.

2) The 3" lifted leaves in the rear, while great for offroading when empty sagged a bit under the weight.

The fix:

Finish the dog box and installed airbags in the rear to assist when loaded, while still allowing a good ride when empty.

I fitted LED Headlight globe replacements, and painted my wheels black (Not sure if they looked better silver yet or not?)

Found my spotties stopped working once the LED Globes went in, so I went the whole hog and completely rewired the whole circuit with LED Carling switches.

You need to use an extra relay in order to get the Carling switches and spotlights to work correctly (to convert it to positively switched), I have attached a picture of a way to do it without using the switch in the high amp line.

Also fitted carling LED rocker switches for the reverse lights, winch controls, compressor, jump start solenoid and tray lights. As well as a fuse panel to keep it all neat and tidy.

To be fair, I have had that tent for 5 years now and use it all the time, only time I had dramas was one of the plastic nuts come off, replaced them all with steel and good to go

The clamshell ones are cool though, but they aren't as long either, im 6 foot 5 so don't fit in a lot of them lol

I did find one Australian made which is 2.3m long. Love it.

Totally off topic.

By comparison I am a midget but I use southern cross canvas king swag it’s 2.4m long. (I replaced the original mattress with a standard size double bed self inflating one and use the extra space at the end to keep shoes and gear so it’s in with you clean, dry and bug free.
Worth a look for anyone over 6ft.

Hey TOYZX,

They are a heavy duty CV from Drivetech 4x4 but they are noticeably larger than the factory Toyota ones. They have been in it for like 3 years now (I have never broken one since).

A friend that owns a Diesel repair shop here in Mackay sourced them, the diff drop kit and the Adjustable UCA's all at the same time.

I have a feeling it all came from Monster Rides???

I will jump under it this arvo and see if I can get a photo of the part number for you. I have attached a photo of them that I found in my phone randomly haha, It also shows how good my angles are even after a 3 inch lift :P

Also the Airbags are have only got air in them when fully loaded or towing a heavy boat, rest of the time only 5-10 psi in them to stop them pinching.
