Just read through your whole build ! bloody impressed ! love the rig, I would love to go back to when I first got mine and do things properly from the start, now I’m forever changing things ! haha.

Seen critters switch panel which lead me to your build and I got a good read! it’s taken me to 1:45am [emoji28] shit.

you’ve now convinced me to get those lights, been thinking for atleast 4 years, but I think it’s time !

Thanks mate!
Hahah don’t worry I spent many a nights the same way when I first bought mine!
Would definitely recommend the lights with hid bulbs. The light out put is day and night compared to stock, and they look a lot nicer as well!

How'd the brake upgrade go man? Am looking into the exact same items. Dont want to have to buy new wheels and tyres and go to 17inch just to fit bigger brakes so I wanna try these first.

Tyler and TOYZX, hope it’s not an obvious question but will you guys be using the stock hilux brake calipers or have you already upgraded them? Also are you sticking with rear drums or have you got disks back there too?
Just planning and budgeting for this year. Cheers, Cam.

TRS build

Postby Tyler1993 on Thu, 11 Jan 2018 5:40 +0000

TOYZX, I haven't put them in yet sorry. Hopefully saturday, so ill let you know then!
Have you heard about running the subaru pads aswell?

Cameron12, I Still have the stock calipers, Was just going to see how this goes first rather than do the whole lot when its maybe not needed.
And yeah Im going to keep the drums aswell can't justify the $$, what actually makes a huge difference is if you keep checking the rear drum adjustment.
I was amazed how far I had to adjust mine when they are meant to be self adjusting.
Im not sure if its just mine that are bad or its hilux's in general.
Caus after I adjusted them they were good for about a week then I had to adjust them again.
They seemed to have settled though as I haven't adjusted them for about a month now and they still feel good.

TRS build

Postby Tyler1993 on Fri, 12 Jan 2018 5:11 +0000

Thanks Sam!

TOYZ,
They seem to have the exact mounting points but more surface area on the pad.
Here is some pictures to compare.
The Hilux ones are scalloped on the inner edge where as the WRX ones are flat

The sides also taper off earlier than the WRX pads, again giving the Subaru ones more surface area on the rotor.

And these are the mounting points

Pads back to back

Also note these are comparing the new WRX pads and a set of new Brembo pads that came with the rotors, the QFM 4x4 ones that are in my Hilux at the moment are slightly smaller again. Same shape but just a tiny bit smaller.

Thanks man! Haven't looked yet but dot 3,4and 5.1 are all compatible. 4 and 5.1 have an additive to handle higher temps tham dot 3.

TRS build

Postby Tyler1993 on Sat, 13 Jan 2018 4:49 +0000

Alright managed to have a crack at the brake upgrade today.
Before photo Image

So I decided to trial some Subaru WRX pads as the mounting points seemed exactly the same but they have more surface area on the actual pads.
The only thing you have to do is make sure the pad with the low level screecher goes on the inside of the rotor.
I worked this out by sitting the pads where the old ones left a mark on the old rotor.
If you have the screecher on the outside it come in contact with the section around the hub Image

But on the back it has plenty of room Image

New vs old rotor Image

WRX pads fit perfectly
Image

Tried to start the braided brake lines on the drivers side but they are f@$&n tight! Ended up rounding the nut even with one of these.. Image
Not happy Jan..
I’ll have to replace the solid bit of line when I put them in. Image

After photo

So I went for a drive to test them and holy shit sticks I actually have brakes!
I’m not sure if they take awhile to bed in and get better but even if they don’t I will be more than happy.
I can actually get the abs to start cycling on the bitumen!
And braking distance from 80klm to stop has more than halved!
Very very happy, won’t feel as worried letting the missus drive it now (she has a tendency to drive up peoples arses, then get shitty if someone does it to her..... women...)
I’m not even sure if I will replace the front brake lines now. As I am quite happy with how it feels now.
I will do the rear cause it’s at its limit and I am planning longer shocks and leafs so I need the travel.

Would recommend this upgrade to all if you want that a bit more brake power without doing an entire caliber upgrade!! And saving $$$ for more beers!

Great job Tyler, does anyone know whether these fit post 2013? Although my brakes are fine, if these fit I will do this when the OEM wear out.

About the brake lines, try soaking with wd40, but I bet the brake specialists use multigrips or vice grips to crack them, and maybe replace the nut.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

Great job man. Will have to pull my finger out and order some bits, the ute is almost dangerous to drive if ya not used to how it stops or doesn't lol. Get a good set of vice grips on that brake line, they'll crack off.

TRS build

Postby Tyler1993 on Sun, 14 Jan 2018 6:43 +0000

Hey Gipsy I just had a quick look on their website and it looks like it depends wether you have VSC or not, with no VSC the rotors are 297mm and with VSC they are 318mm. So the pads are a little different.
The mounting holes look similar but Im thinking the pad would be larger to fill the bigger rotor

And thanks mate, will definitely try soaking the rear first! no doubt!

Thanks mate, looks like I have the 318 rotors and according to the bottom one they fit up to 2015.

And yeah pipe, or flare-nut spanners work fine on clean lines but not when a gorilla tightened them up

Well the wrx pads I put in are slightly bigger than the Hilux pads for the 297mm rotor.

But I’m thinking that the Hilux pads to match the 318mm rotor will be bigger than the pads for the 297mm. So the WRX pads although slightly bigger than the 297mm Hilux pads, they may not be bigger than the 318mm Hilux ones.

I know I just saw that... how does that work??
You are getting more rotor than me for cheaper! I feel robbed [emoji23]
