Why a 2007 SR Extracab?
I've been a fan of the hilux since my farming days, driven a few but never owned one. Used (and abused) all sorts of Utes but the Toyota's were the only ones that seemed to hold up. Cruisers were big and tough, but heavy and not as agile as the lux. And the bigger trucks keep the tracks trimmed wide enough for the hilux get down mostly unscathed.
I wanted a tray long enough to sleep on, as well as room behind the seat, so extra cab was the answer.
Diesel for towing, manual cos I just like em. And I've boiled an auto on the beach once.
Planning on pillar pod so pre 2012.
I was patient, watched the market and forums for 6 months, was very happy to find this at the right price.

10 years old, 200k's, ex Alinta, never seen a dirty road let alone a dirt road. Had it's 200k service 2k's prior, 18 months ago, so it's been shed' for a while. New battery with the deal. Not a mark on the bash plates or on ally steps. All stock except for the flexiglass canopy and tray.

Preston beach for the christening.

Adding the future / wish list here: (keeping it legal in the Western 'nanny' state)

•Fronts struts to carry the barwork, ~30mm lift, probably adjustables to counter the inevitable settling in sag
•31/10.5/15 or 265/70/16, probably go the 16's because they have more offset options in sunnies
•Black 8" sunnies, p10 or p20
•carjoying head unit with the 7450 chip swap, all plumbed up and decent speakers
•GME TX3345
•Bash plates
•Recovery points
•fuel pre filter
•cruise control
•mfc steering wheel
•Pillar pod
•Under tray boxes and drawer
•Water tank
•Fishing rod holder
•long range tank
•Fyrlyt or HTX230 driving lights
• side led search lights

Time to make it mine. Got a great deal from OCAM on snorkel, bullbar, scrub bars, steps, 17k winch w synthetic rope, bonnet protector and weather strips.

Snorkel first - thanks to DB's detailed guide. [emoji106]

Winch and bullbar.

Happy with all this, but don't like the way the bonnet protector sits so won't fit it. Undecided on the weather shields.

Interior protection, really love the black duck denims, dash mat and sand grabber floor mats.

Wasn't too impressed with the wiring for the bullbar lights but I'm in this for the process as much as the result. ImageImage
Image

Bullbar came with some trim plates underneath that didn't fit so well, and leaves the radiator a bit exposed.
Image
But that's no big deal because I plan on getting a bash plate made up that will replace it.

Then it was time to let someone else work on her, down to my local ARB rep for twin lockers.

Collecting bits for manifold clean, have got egr plate, crow foot spanner, ordered HPD can, still need a set of gaskets. Have also ordered a vxdiag nano w techstream, will see how the injectors are before I pull it apart.
Still got a long list, the more I read this forum the longer it gets.

Didn't notice the lights until you mentioned it[emoji15]. I'd done about 300km when I pulled it apart, and none at night. The lights are pretty shocking, will start with brighter globes and get some driving lights by the by. They're on the list...

Let there be light.

Made a huge difference, definitely recommended.
Stayed away from the blue headlight bulbs. You're welcome, oncoming traffic.

Beautiful piece of machining this bit of kit. Wasn't going to install it until I'd done the EGR clean but couldn't help myself.
Ended up pulling the intercooler off to attach the hose to the rocker cover, very tight fit. Used the Mrs hair dryer and plenty of elbow grease. Now I've had a look under there, I'm more confident to do the manifold and all.

EGR and manifold clean over the weekend, well worth doing.

Haven't had it out for a run yet, but happy (and relieved) it started after about 10 seconds of cranking.

Thinking out loud about wheel options, keeping it legal without engineering approval.
TRD wasn't out in 2007 so have a 31" limit:
31x10.5x15
265/70R16
265/65r17
All about the same overall size and should fit without rubbing with 1" lift limitation.
Smaller rim = bigger sidewall, better floatation, less likely to dent a rim.
Bigger rim = less sidewall to stake, better high speed stability on road. More expensive rubber.
Need 7-9" rim for that size tyre. Wider rim, more chance of denting, less chance of pinching sidewall?
Offset. Limited to 50mm wider than standard track, but I can base it off SR5's 30mm rather than SR's 45mm. So max is +5.
Sunny's look fine and are half the price of the next cheapest wheel.

Image

Tyres- 265/70 16 in a decent all terrain, not too many options give an S speed rating, seems KO2 is the best option.

Few bits over the weekend.

Inverted tow bar mod:

Fishing rod holder:

And ran a permanent active to the light in the canopy. It already had a light there, but was powered off the tail lights so had to leave the parkers on if I wanted to use it.

In one of those pics above you can see my recovery boards, in the under tray rack. 4x tread pros and a shovel, with a pad locked gate.

Decided to change the head unit for something a) actually works and b) has navigation. Got a bit carried away and ended up with this (but still no head unit!)Image
