What mods required to beef up tow capacity?

Postby tommygee on Thu, 22 Dec 2016 3:50 +0000

Hi all. I have a 2011 Double cab SR5 Hilux built in Jan so im stuck with only 2250kg towing capacity. All i have changed so far is ARB bull bar, 2 inch spacers on the front & thrown on a set of BFG 265/70R17 muddies on.
I want to purchase an off road pop top van to explore the rugged out back. Probably looking at wanting to tow something just under 3 ton.
What mods would i need to do to beef my lux up to a 3ton tow capacity?

Get rid of them spacers(we all know how much trouble they cam be especially when offroad!) and put in a quality suspension kit for starters! Wire up an electric brake controller, the redarc towpro is awesome! That'll get ya started.

GVM up grade is only for your hilux not for your towing capacity you need to see a engineer in your state.
if I'm wrong please correct my as a GVM dos not change your total combined mass.
It is a heave pop top.

Best mod you can do for exploring rugged outback at 3 ton is a trade in on a landcruiser!! That aint what the hilux is designed for!!

You can't.

PS: Get rid of those strut spacers.

Sadly you pretty much cant change the towing capacity. An engineering certificate is required which costs like 5k+ (on top of the modifications needed to pass).

Don't tow anything than your car is not rated for as insurance will not cover you.

Get a wagon if you wanna do some heavy towing. Utes have a long levering overhang from the rear axle which puts a strain on the chassis and disturbs the handling of the tow car.
