Luke's V6

Hi All,

Picked up my hilux this morning - its an SR V6 dual cab in a manual with an ARB bullbar and canopy.

Plans are:
Take off the canopy off (done)
Sr5 flares (going on tomorrow)
Sr5 Roll Bar
2 inch lift for the front
265's or 285's muddies with some chopping

I have a set of flares that i will put on tomorrow and then hunt for some tyres, lift and roll bar

Nice clean slate man. You'll be doin a stack of chopping with 285s on stock rims. Probs wont fit anyway, will hit the uca's.

Does the SR5 bar fit an SR?
I'd do the rear susp when you do the front, worth every $ for good stuff like Ultimate.
Look at a front brake upgrade and 17's too. 265/65/17 make the speedo just about spot on.
Be careful of the clutch in these, it is about the only weak point of V6's.

Welcome - you have an awesome engine there in the 1GR-FE V6. Just keep it serviced with quality oil and these things will see 800,000 to a million k's with little or no problems.

Liston to HK1837 on the 265/65R17 - it's a very good tyre size for the weight and size of your Hilux as it gets the best out of the tyre (work wise and grip) plus there is an enormous amount of Tyre choice for you which keeps the price down. As HK1837 said it makes the speedo almost 100% accurate.

I like the FJ Cruiser wheels on the lux - they look good and sit 10mm further out and you can get them cheap.

17 inch Prado rims fit straight on and readily available, I put 265/65/17 Toyo Open Country on, brilliant tyres. Enjoy your new motor.

Speedy sell the 120 Series Landcruiser Prado Grande rims as copies, I have them in all black and they were stuff all $ wise. I run Yokohama Geolander AT's. Not mud tyres but awesome tyres.

Gulfstream is spot on with the oil. I use 10W-40 Nulon synthetic in mine, change every 6 months.

I have asked two service managers at large Toyota dealerships about Hiluxes, out of the 100's and 100's of drivetrain warranty claims on Hiluxes they've both had only one or two V6 ones in and it was for clutches, the rest were for diesel engines and 4spd auto gearboxes from diesels prior to them getting the V6's A750F auto.

Today the flares went on. The clips that came with the kit were no where near long enough, so spent the day getting some new clips and then putting the flares on.

1st one was the drivers front, which fit really well and the rubber was tightly jammed between the body and the flare.

The next three didn't seem to mate that well with the body and there are some gaps. Now without drilling holes in the wheel arches, any way to get them to mate tightly with the body?

would a heat gun and some pressure to shape the guard do the trick?

Also, the front will getting some new struts soon - been put off strut spacers so I'm going to grab a pair of pre-assembled front struts. I'm on a budget, and I know there are some unreal suspension kits out there, but looking on the cheaper side of things:

- I've seen opposite Lock and Dobinson do a pair of raised pre-assembled front struts for about the $500 mark
- These any better than the ebay cheapies?

Also, does anyone make a pre-assembled 3 inch lifted front strut (not a 2inch with a spacer on top)?

If ya value your pride and joy save a bit longer and get some good stuff! You'll only end up buy it all twice! Give ultimate suspension a ring if you want to go down the 3inch road.

Side steps off, roll bar in.

Took it for a drive on some gravel roads and up to the snow, nothing serious.

The tyres are tiny and the front is permanently facing the ground, so putting in some 2 inch dobinson struts in the front and some muddies.

Tyre wise, thinking 235/85s or some 265/75 both on 16 inch rims. Leaning towards the 265's for chunkier look and less gearing side effects and required trimming, could anyone suggest going with one size over the other?

I'd still not go any bigger than 265/65/17 on the right offset rims. My mate put 265/70/16 on his 2011 SR5 with a slightly different offset to mine and they scrubbed.
Get your front brakes checked too. Mine sagged the same as yours and it near shut off the rear brakes and cooked the fronts.

265s, much easier to get hold of if your away and need a replacement. 30mm wider doesn't sound like much but when ya deflate them a bit it makes a big difference.

Its been a while since I last posted. In this time, I've added a few things:
- Light bar
- UHF
- Tie down points in the tub
- 2.5 inch lift in the front (actually lifted the front about 3.5 inches from where it was - so sagged)
- 265/76/16 muddies (on the hunt for some 255/85 or 285/75)

It rides alot better now with the front suspension in and have gained a heap of clearance under the front now.

I'm looking at a set of 33's on 15 inch rims. Is there a certain offset range that i should have (p10 as min and n22 as max etc) in order for these 15 inch rims to fit or is it more down to the actual manufacturer of the rim?

Been out wheeling a fair bit and it has surprised me where it has gone. Was doing some calculations and the diff clearance when on 285/75s and compares pretty favourably to a patrol even on 36's. So pretty keen on getting some 285's under here or 33s.

Also got rid of the flares because the fit was just shocking on the rears and front passenger side (massive gaps).

Anyone know how much a workshop charges to isntall a snorkel roughly?

Most workshops will charge 2-3hrs labour for a snorkel (I think that's the recommended time in their pricing book), even though if they've done a lot of them it can be fitted in under one hour.

So, you're probably looking at $150 - $200.

To be honest, they're well worth attempting yourself, the only daunting bit is drilling into that shiny guard and 'A' pillar, the rest is just a matter of trying not to break too many fragile little inner guard clips.

As long as you take your time with the measurement, and use a pair of curved cut tin snips rather than a hole saw (which can go very wrong, very quickly), there's not much to it.

A decent workshop should be able to fit a snorkel on one of these in 2 hours max, I'm doin them all the time so I can do it in half that. Why do you want to go to 15s? When I was researching it I found most 15s are only around 6ply max, where as most 16s are 10ply. Much stronger tyres. Jusy a thought. Offset, I'd be goin for p10 or 0, I run 0. Be prepared to do some chopping. Keep up the good work mate.

Yeah righto, are you based in Melbourne or know of anyone in Melb that will fit one? I can get relatively cheap ones from Dobinsons through work so I'll probably get one of theirs, BUT... I called them today, bloke said an extra $400 to fit it - I couldn't believe it, arb charge half that. So I'm now looking for someone else who will fit a Dobinsons snorkel

Yes, after more research, I think I'll just stick with the 16s and grab a set of 285s or 255/85s if I can find a set at a good price.

Now have a set of 285 kumho road venture MTs on gu steelies and a set of 9 inch LED driving lights.

Next on the list:
- Snorkel
- Winch (and a bar that is winch compatible becuase current one is non winch :x )
- Sliders
