Tairal's 2014 Charcoal SR5

Postby Tairal on Wed, 18 May 2016 6:48 +0000

A few months back I bought my first hilux!

After being screwed around by the freight company I used to move it interstate it was such a great feeling driving it home from the yard and I couldn't have been happier with my purchase :D

Stock as a rock she's a my14 SR5, no extras except leather interior.

A few weeks passed and I caught the mod fever, itching, I compiled a list.
I live around the south coast region and there are quite a few creeks and water crossings that can get pretty deep when it rains. So naturally I chose to get a snorkel first.

Do it right do it once, after reading through reviews I decided eBay cheapies were out of the question. Tjm and Stainless were I found too pricey to justify. I managed to source a Safari snorkel off an eBay 4wd store in Melbourne for $400 inc. postage.

Being a stickler for doing the work myself instead of paying someone to do it for me, I picked up the required tools and went at it.

First I removed the guards and flares, then masked the quarter panel before taping on the template.

Once again scrivets are absolute ass****s

The 111mm hole was a bit nerve-racking, but it just had to be done. After all the bolt holes were drilled I touched all exposed metal with some primer. I test fitted the snorkel to line up the pillar bracket, with a light assertive shove it fell into place perfectly! Unforunately it started to rain, but I pushed through because a little rain won't hurt

Bolted with loctite and I gotta say I'm very pleased with how it turned out. And it only took just under 2 hours start to finish

Also I forgot to say, i noticed the auto headlights come on pretty late in the twilight and having a charcoal grey lux, its not till I get close that people see me.
So i installed some DRL's which replace the plastic inserts next to the fog lights. I added in a dimmer relay and wired them to be constantly bright and then auto dim when my headlights turn on.

I picked up a hardlid for $400. A quick search online and I found the fitting instructions (pm me if you need them, I have instructions to fit both with and without tub liner). Painstakingly I drilled the holes then got a mate to help lift the hardlid up to install the hinge pins

I want to install some actuators and hook them up to the central locking. Using the key on both sides is very annoying and slow. I ordered a few actuators off eBay, I'll update on the install when they turn up.

Haha the feeling you get for doing it yourself feels better than paying someone, feels better in my mind and wallet haha.

Small addition today.
Bought some weather shields off eBay.
Now I can keep the windows cracked even when it's raining :)

New rims paired with new tires! Scrubs a bit on the front mud flaps, hopefully a a few cuts with the dremel to the centre of the flaps where it touches will fix that.

Would also be keen to hear about this. The thing is a pain in the arse to lock.

Hey mate I've got the actuators and test fitted it up but have got round to installing it yet. Will definitely post it up when I'm done.

Steve9R's mod is central lock for your tailgate. I'm going for a central locking hardlid.
Still a good mod to do though, a hardlid has enough flex it could probably be opened with enough force

So many weeks have passed by and still haven't gotten round to the actuators to lock the hardlid, still on the list of things to do though.

What i have done is added some led strip lighting to the underside of the hardlid, very bright for $7 each and amazingly useful when camping or general use in the dark

Image

I've hooked up the power from inside the fuse panel on the drivers side, run the wires through the grommet into the engine bay and down the chassis to the rear wheel well and into the tub.

Also bought some rhino racks and fitted them to the hardlid!
These should be good to hold atleast 100kg, ive even tested them by standing on them (though i only weigh around 70kg)

Image
they were an absolute pain to fit since there was no guide i could use, but eventually i managed to get it sitting straight and evenly spaced before riveting it the the lid.

another small mod, blacked out the sports bar.

Image

Turned out quite nice, though i did spend a while prepping, then hit it with primer before applying two coats of matte black.

Small update, fire extinguisher fitted to the front of the passenger seat with a custom bracket
Image
Also fitted an ARB CMKP12 compressor in the tub.
Image
Stuck in some sound deadening and layed foam on top, works well if you have noisy tires and tend to leave the rear seat up regularly.
