2010 sr tourer build

Postby Clamfisherman on Wed, 17 Feb 2016 7:24 +0000

think its about time I put up some pics of my Hilux getting ready to do a trip up north, supposed to go august this year but the couple we were going with decided to have a baby, quite rude really only thinking of themselves.

so now I have a few years to build and perfect my car before we go, I started off with an ex Sargents vehicle which had steel tray, steel wheels, shitty winch bar and uhf

a friend of mine had bought a 2010 sr5 and she drove straigt to the shop to get some 20s and put her sr5 rims in the shed so I bought them of her and used them until the h/ts needed replacing.
I had the windows tinted dark and bought a toolbox for the back

windows tinted and alloys on the steel tray was looking to much like a farm ute so like a d*ck head I sold the tray and with the money I got I bought a sr5 tub and flares to suit the front

this is where I started to go the wrong way I should of powder coated the tray and built a canopy for that but im past the point of no return.'

I got the tub from tyre power and got tjm flares from them as well being told that they are identical to the sr5 ones, wrong this is bullshit and they are completely different, the rubber they supply is huge and black just how tjm like it, I bough a second set of rubber from them to put on the back flares to make them look uniform, wrong again. luckily I found on this forum the ute shop in kawana who hooked me up with some flares that suit thank fcuk for that.

for a while I just ran no flares didn't worrie about it, the only thing was the springs were set for the heavy tray and now my headlights were just worm burners.
I found a chrome rear bar on gumtree for $50 so I put that on to and took off the side steps to give the illusion of height

put 40mm spacers in the front to lift it up abit and found a ironman bar on facebook that was twisted so I straitened it and put it on, I wasn't happy with the build quality and on corrugation the bar moved and hit my quarter panels so I sold that

I also found some of the new style sr5 rims on fb that had kos on them with enough tread to make them worth it, and sourced a sports bar of a late model

so now ive sold the ironman bar and went to the tjm and arb dealership looking for a hoopless bar, trying not to spend a million dollars on a sahara bar also, both tjm and arb looked at me funny when I asked about hoopless bars, I ended up back at tyre power again and ordering a dobinson bar which I was told could be run hoopless, (wrong again) while its off and im waiting for my new bar I cleaned all the surface rust and rust proofed and painted the chassis black and filled the chassis rail with rust cure

bar finally arrived and car was booked in for fitting, nope ordered a bar for the face lift model for some reason so it didn't fit, I think the sports bar and rims threw them off a bit I did tell them it was a 2010.

with the rooftop tent and the boat getting the worst fuel economy so i want to build a half size canopy because its getting a pain in the neck to lift it on and off all the time, i built a gantry rail and use a chain block but still annoying

Nice build mate, coming along nicely, $900 for canvas is about right unfortunately but this all depends on what material you are wanting to use, I was lucky and got my canvas work done for $650 but this is only because the guy really wanted to do it to get his new business out there and as it was a custom out of the norm job, apparently material alone was around the $550 mark. I made my bar work so the tent sat lower like yours although not as low as you can see, the RTT just clears my head when set up. Image
I used a heavy duty canvas as it will still "breath" and not keep moisture inside, I also added a pocket in the rear for rubbish, wet clothes or dirty recovery gear. 1 thing I would like to have added would be some extra storage pockets up at the headboard on the inside, would have been handy and I guess I can always get this added in later.

Have you given any thoughts on having doors on the canopy for security reasons?

Cheers

yeah thought about the doors need a way to lock the tailgate then my fridge wont fit out the side, yours looks nice probably could have gone higher but its made now, I haven't done anything in the tray either for storage I did cut my seat this morning to use the space behind there.

My fridge lives in the back so I had to make it all secure, my tailgate cannot be opened unless the rear canopy door is open, used stainless locking T bar handles all keyed the same for all 3 doors. Rear seat storage is a handy space for sure. Keep the pics coming on your build mate cheers.
