Yeah I did mention to the installer that on the Redarc Hilux they put it behind the radiator. He seemed to think this spot would be okay though...

Where do you normally put them?

Have put a couple in the engine bay but I usually male up a bracket and put them between the grill and radiator.

Can you tell me about running 265/70's; in particular, does it throw out your speedo by much? Affect fuel economy or power much? What air pressure are you running in them?

I'm asking because I'm currently running 265/65r17 on my fj rims and would like to go a bit bigger. My other option I'm considering is 285/65r17. Very similar rolling diameter as the 265/70s but a bit more width (to fill out those guards a bit more ) but I've heard pushing that the extra width really sucks the power and effects fuel economy noticeably. I'm not sure if that's true.

Hey mate,

I've been away since just after Christmas so have spent a fair bit of time with the Lux. The tyre and suspension combo is awesome, feels so much more capable off road and better on road too.

Tyre pressure - I've been running 36 psi all round on the bitumen and adjusting according to conditions when off road.

Economy - I haven't really been tracking... At a really rough estimate I'd say 600kms per tank.

Power - haven't noticed anything major. The car has been loaded and a bit on the roof too so that all affects things.

Speedo - looks pretty much on actually but each car is different.

One note - the tyres are scrubbing a bit on the mud guards at certain angles. This is weird given my old tyres were the same size and didn't scrub. I put it down to the chunk of the KO2s. I've contacted Ultimate Suspension and they think I should be able have the wheel alignment set to avoid scrubs... I will sort it when I get home. If a wheel alignment doesn't resolve this, I'll probably get Superpro adjustable upper camber arms.

Been awhile since I've posted an update. About a month ago I picked up a Rhino Dome 1300 awning. I love it because when packed away, it's exactly the length of my roof rack - no over hang. Also, there's heaps of headroom when setup (I'm a tall bastard).

Went in for its 80,000km service the other day. While it was in they fitted up:
- Denso snorkel
- Phat Bars bash and sump plates
- HPD catch can

Just wondering where you mounted your IC-450? It looks like it's under the centre console area. Thinking about getting one (as well as the same/similar flat rack).

About to order a rhino platform with the rlt500 legs like you have (did want the quick release rlt600 but the salesperson said they arnt as quick release as rhino make out haha), any chance you could get me a height at the front and back of the platform? Need to know if the thing will still fit in the shed.

I had replacement upper control arms installed the other day. I went with SuperPro Lift-Align Arms (TRC470) that were recommended by Ultimate.

Result: no more scrubbing on the mudflaps and the alignment is perfect. Drives really nicely.

Got the same set-up mate, great item. I had a prang a little bit ago and they saved the rest of the axle/hub from damage by absorbing a bit of the hit.

Sorry to ask, but do you remember what size Rhino Rack you went with? I just bought the variant with the 1528mm x 1236mm tray.

Also recently installed an ICOM IC-450 in the same spot as yours - cheers for the confirm on the install location.

Thanks mate! Bought the same one...sorry that I'm a bit disjointed in my questioning but did you get the RLT600 Quick Mount legs as well? How easy is it to remove the roof rack?

I got the RLT500 legs, couldn't see a lot of value in the quick mount legs. I've never taken it off so can't comment on ease of removal!

I've got the quick mount legs as I hang the flat rack from the rafters under the house unless I am using the rack. I basically drive the car under the house and tension up four cam buckle straps from the corners of the roof rack to the house floor structure. Pop each of the quick mount legs off and go around lifting and tensioning each corner. Takes about 10 minutes all up.

Install is the opposite (obviously).

No problems with the removal but I did have one leg that would not reconnect properly first time. The shop that installed replaced that leg. Since then no issues but I usually have to pull and lean on the rack on a couple of corners to get the mounts to engage properly each time.

The quick mounts do sit the rack higher than the rhino backbone style mounts seem to but I haven't seen the hilux backbone in person.

Quick mount system is good for me as I only seem to use the rack once every couple of months lately and would rather not have the height and wind noise the rest of the time.
