Shamat's build Inc custom tray

Postby shamat on Tue, 01 Dec 2015 10:07 +0000

I've started working on a custom tray and draw system that uses the styleside tub. When done it should provide a flat tray top and deep drawer underneath. I'm also including hinged panels for easy access to the fridge and space around the wheel arches. Will be topped with rubber matting and a canvas canopy on top.

Started by welding up the basic frame.
Found the tray was not square and the floor ran at some funky angles, so needed to cut and lengthen in places.
was a pain in the A$$ trying to use a stick welder so managed to convince the missus to buy me a MIG.
Image
Added some sheet metal to the top.
Image
Hinged the side and rear panels. There is a small lip that runs all around where a rubber strip will be used to seal them when closed.
Image
All the top panels on and the side panels ready for the rollers for the drawer.
Image
Welded some pipe in each corner as a recess for the 2" bars for the canopy to sit in. Just tacked in at this stage.
Image
Will be sealing it all up with silicone and rubber strips etc.

There is still quite a bit to go, but it's started :D

Thanks Knoxy.
Yeah, it will be completely sealed with rubber strip sitting between the tub lip and the tray top. Already got seals around the tail gate.
Each of the lift up panels has a 20mm metal lip welded to the frame where the panels sit that will also have a rubber strip.
Doubt it will be "water proof", but should be pretty close to it.

Finally had ther Dobsinsons MMR suspension setup arrive. Here are just some of the goodies that went in over the weekend.
Image
There were also new LCA's, Steering knuckle/spindles, extended UCA ball joints, front wheel beartings/hub assemblies, new rear leaf springs with greasable pins and shackles.
Found I need to put a limiting dtrap on the front as the drop is INSANE. Extended brake lines are also needed all round.

Decided I wasn't happy with the cusom draw sytem in the styleside tub. It worked OK, but after a 3 week trip i found a few things that just didnt work how i had envisaged.
So after very little deliberation the tub was off and work on a fully custom camping tray setup has begun.

Hey all,
It's been a while since I logged in and updated anything so here is a quick rundown on the build.

Got MW Toolboxes to make me a custom canopy. I designed it, drew it up and had them build it. Pictures say more than words. There is a slide draw in the passenger side that wasn't installed when I took the pictures. Its big enough for my 70ltr fridge :) I've also mounted a ring holder for a 4kg gas bottle just inside the door at the rear.

Under the tray I've mounted a water tank and air tank.
The filler for the water tank is built into the tray headboard and uses a brass push on hose fitting.
The headboard was added after I took this photo.
Image

In the remaining space under the tray I've built a fully sealed drawer (and changed the rear lights while I was at it).
This will be used as my kitchen with gas cooker and wash tub etc. Just hook a hose to the mounted gas bottle in the canopy.

And I've wired up the canopy with switches, solar regulator, inverter etc.

Now to fill in the sides of the tray and use different guards.

New Uneek front bar and winch coming this week too.

33s went on a week ago and i found the front guards needed some trimming.
Cut and folded the bottom of the guards about 25mm.

Also ordered and modifed the new Utemart 60mm wide flares to suit the new wheel arch profile. Fiberglassed and readyfor finishing.

Yeah, I was surprised too. Though the body mount chop and some small trimming on the inside of the flares would have been enough - seems that is all that everyone else had to do. But, as I'm finding with this build, everything seems just a bit more involved. I suspect that these tyres might be a little larger as they have deep tread, even though they are only 285/70R17's. I've heard it depends on where the manufacturer takes their measurement from..

“In the remaining space under the tray I've built a fully sealed drawer”

Have you tested the seals in a river crossing? I’ve found those style t handled latches don’t provide the sealing force to get a proper water tight seal. Do you get any condensation issues?

Great build by the way

That's a killer setup mate. Well thought out.

Do you run your aux battery under the bonnet and supply canopy from there?

I am "looking" at doing the same sort of thing.
