G'day Groovers,
just out of curiosity how come you are building such a huge frame for underneath ? I would have thought that the standard frame would have been stong enough out of the box ??

Also Wade...Love the ridgies....Yes am the proud owner of one :D

Hey Lee,

Yeah the ridgies are great dogs!!
In regards to the big thick frames underneath; I just thought thicker stronger would be better for offroad use. They can cop a beating on some of the tracks and there is nothing worse then a broken trailer in the middle of the bush some where.
That was my theory anyway :)
Cheers

Wade

i regards to the size of the steel in the chassis same theory as wade (and the fact that i allready had the steel here at home), i made my draw bar extra long because it will have a tool box and a trailbike mounted on there, the weight of the trail bike is also the reason the draw bar goes all the way from the hitch to the back of the trailer with no join.

jep, the axle i used is 1675 from tip to tip, so by the time the hubs went on the track is only about 9mm narrower then the hilux's track assuming i have the same offset wheels on the trailer as the ute which i will have eventually, the hilux diff is 1600mm from drum to drum if memory serves correctly

Hey Shane,

I had no issue with the pits, it got the rubber stamp first go with the local guys who do the slip before you take it to the RTA.
yours will be fine.

Shane,

Your Monaro seems hugely popular.

Could you tell me more of this vehicle in particular and why does everyone seem to want it????

brendan, the intrest in these old australian classics has gone through the roof in the last couple of years to the point where original ones in good condition are very expensive, i am lucky that i've always been a monaro fan and so bought the one in the pictures and another one in the garage a long time ago, coz theres no way i could afford to buy them at todays prices.

G'day Shane, any update on your trailer? I'm particularly interested as to how you've done the motorbike mount as I've been contemplating doing one of late instead of my 7x5 tandem trailer which isn't really off-roadable.

Dave i got the trailer rego'd and put matching wheels on it but haven't done much else to it as i've been doing a minor refurb of sorts to the house getting it ready for our first child which is due in a few months, as far as the trailbike mounts go i was just going to weld a 150x50 u channel across the drawbar just in front of the tub for the tyres to sit in and i've welded some chain links to the drawbar in various places to attach tiedowns to.
But having the bike mounted there will see it hanging out either side of ute/trailer a bit so will have to be mindful of that.

Great... I was talking to someone yesterday who said I'd need to put a big box on the front if I use a dualcab tray to get it licensed... apparently something to do with equal distance of body is required in front and behind the axle...

Thanks smithy,

davis.16 i just built it as close to what i thought would be road worthy then went and got a wieghbridge then booked it in to go over the pits for an inspection, the only thing they knocked me back on as far as the build was the number plate light was about an inch to low and you could see it from behind but they were absolutly anal about all the recipts they wanted to see reciepts for everything from the steel that i bought for the chassis to the wireing to the hubs and everything in between and they wern't going to pass it until i produced them. i spose there trying to stop people stealing and re regestering stolen trailers.

Dave, that sound a bit strange mate but thats not to say it aint true, probably the best bet would be to take some pictures of mine or wades trailer along to the rego boys and ask them seeing as they have the final say. i wouldn't be relying on what every body else reckons cos everbodys got a different idea.

After reading the last post cant help but think back, when I was younger my Dad used to build all sorts of trailers at home in the shed and I cant help but think the axle position was behind the centre of the trailer an inch for every foot of length in the body (tray). So a 7 x 5 trailer has the axle 7 inches behind the centre of the over all length of trailer (hitch to rear). Could be wrong maybe some-one knows more?

Cheers Jason
