Yeah I'm having trouble explaining the design to my old man, he just cant get the idea that I don't want an off the shelf standard setup. He keeps telling me I'm making it hard for myself and I keep telling him I don't care about hard I just want (what I think is) a good looking tray. Stay tuned for some more unusual ideas that he cant get his head around!

Fair bit of head scratching going on in the shed the last week or so but finally might be getting somewhere with a bunch of pretty rough templates under way for some pretty serious angle folding to happen soon.

Progress is slow but it is coming up a treat. Had some fun cutting out all the stupid shapes and got them folded up.

Started welding together all the shapes, looks like some kind of artistic sculpture piece

I need to get some bits re folded in the next couple of days as things are a bit tight so its now on with the rear hurdle to match the front headboard.

Now Ive just got to work out if I really want sides or not. Will probly end up making them as its harder to add them later. I was trying to have all clean smooth lines and no hinges/fixings on the side rails for sides, so still thinking how to go about hooking the sides on with no external hinges. hmmm.
This is the kind of smooth lines I'm chasing but having the option to add sides somehow when I want them. most of the time I wont have anything on at all just the plain tray.

Cheers mate. I've been a cabinet maker for 15 years but it seems I may have this metalwork thing under control too. Sure helps when my brother is a boily and fitter/machinist for some tips.

Gunna put an alloy top so that will help a bit to keep weight under control, my calculations are telling me we should end up just under 250 kgs

This is awesome. A lot of innovation which is great. I would strongly suggest that you do sides if you are going to use the ute for work. I have a mate who got a ute with no sides... He got good at tying knots (was before the days of cheap ratchet straps)

At this stage fish I'm leaning towards no sides but I may kick myself later. I grew up on a farm so was taught how to tie knots and much prefer rope over ratchets any day of the week. Obviously I don't have a rope rail but hopefully today will get out to the shed and put on my substitution for rope rail. 99% of the time I carry nothing and have access to trailers if need be so this tray is more about a project for me to build and something that I think looks good and suits my needs. I'm still struggling to get the old man to understand that! I'll try and update again soon

Fair enough mate, it's looking great. I can't tie knots so I tie lots. [emoji1]

Final details going on now, recessed fuel filler and finished off the trundle drawer front.
Image

Image

Image
Cut in the stop/tail light on the headboard and added the rope rail substitute down the sides of the tray. I don't carry much so hopefully these will be strong enough to tie down smaller stuff.
Image

Image
Tail lights on and we are off to get some quotes on powder coat, pickup the headboard from the folder and get a couple of sheets of chequer plate for the floor.
