kempy's hilux

Postby anthony kemp on Sat, 20 Oct 2012 6:21 +0000

hey all thought it was about time i chucked up a build thread now that my hilux is lookin like a real 4x4.im new to the 4x4 world so dont be scared to tell me im doing something wrong hahah. when i first got my hilux it was as stock as a rock except for a toyota winch bar and ARB canopy.

details:
2009 white SR 4x4 hilux
dual cab
manual turbo diesel
ABS
60,000km

but having a few mates that are into 4x4s (1x new ranger, 1x hilux, 2x navaras) i couldnt leave it how it was so i started researching and found this little gem of a web site. once i saw the monster rides gear i fell in love and got straight onto max and he sorted me out with a rekon kit. got that installed and set at about 3" with just extended shackles in the rear for the moment. next was tyres and after some research i decided ill go big and get 33's so ordered a set of dynamic 16x8 0 offset rims and Mickey Thompson MTZ 285/75-16 (i do mainly beach driving so AT's might have been a better choice but we a planing a cape york trip so need muddies for that). ithought they wight be loud on the highway but i think there quieter then the stock pizza cutters that were on it.

being a SR it didnt have flares so i ordered a set of extra wide utemart flares and with a bit of swearing and massaging i got them to fit (i think i had trouble because i used a big hammer to flatten out the pinch weald in the guards and that might of moved the mounting lugs around a bit). only problem im having now is the tyres scrubbing the back of the flare on compression when slightly turned and ive trimed the flare as much as i can without it looking dodgy so maybe MR UCA's so i can get more castor.

also did some work on the stereo i didnt want anything to crazy just a nice system that thumps when i want it to. started with a custom sub box to fit a KICKER 10" slim sub , JVC 65wrms splits and a JVC 75wrms x 4ch amp. in the future ill get a mono block amp for the sub and a set of rear speakers and pretty keen on a A-SURE head unit.

needed a good set of spotties up here because the next major town is 300km down the highway and there are a lot of roos and cows so i got a set of lightforce XGT 35w HID spotties and used a lightforce wiring warness to wire them it made it so much easier especially because the hiluxs are negatively swithched (never even heard negative switching before).

how it sits at the moment:
Monster rides rekon kit
Monster rides progressive bump stops (if ya havent got then do it there awesome)
lighforce XGT HIDs
Black Duck seat covers front and rear
Utemart extra wide flares
Mickey Thompson MTZ 285/75-16 on dynamic 16x8" 0 offset
Toyota winch bar
ARB canopy (with whirly bird for more killawasps)

these are the only pics i got so far but there is a big fishing trip in a couple of weeks so should get some good ones then. :D

just finished chopping the body mount. i went with the "V" method i saw in the body mount chop thread.turned out perfect and looks stock. now the only spot touching is the utemart flares but i think ill put up with it as its not that bad and i cant trim it without it lookin sh*tty and obvious.

this is how much i took out

final result

thanks guys... bit of a small update i picked up a Dr air pro flow 150lt/min air compressor for $220. did a bit of research and this one seemed like a winner. tested it out last night and it pumped my 285/75-16 MTZ from 15psi to 40psi in about 2:20min so pretty happy with that :D

hey all im back to reallity... fishing trip went well for team hilux but not so good for team navara hahah both had trouble with slipping clutches but one was so bad the other navara had to tow him the last 150km to where he was getting the new clutch put in. the flywheel was purple and mirror shiny when they removed it so they had to order a new one in with a 3 week shipping time!!! and last i heard it was up around the $2000 so far which is a joke in my books.

only one little thing on my car i went a bit fast over a high cattle grid and it bottomed out my tyres into the top of my arches making the flares pop out a bit but that is easy fixed.

i had a couple of days spare before i went back to work so i cut out the rear muffler and replaced with a straight pipe. was surprised at how little the DB level rose it just added a nice deep rumble at lower revs and it now spools quicker and can hear a waste gate noise when changing gears so it was a nice little mod :D

here are a few pics i didnt get many because i forgot my camera and only had my phone:

ive ordered a HERCULINER kit from the states so that should rock up in about a week. their are a few little cracks in my canopy so ill fix them up and remove the whirly bird why its off. because my canopy is a rough textured one its going to look a bit sh*tty but its better then leaking water i suppose.

been looking at chips lately and was keen on a tunit chip reccomended by my long time tuner but then i saw the chipit pertol injection kit for only $700 more with great power gains so leaning towards that now.

anyone on here running petrol injection and think its worth it ??

got the canopy off and had a quick peak down the sides of the liner and it didnt look too bad just a bit of dirt and scuffing.the bottom of the tray might be a different story though. i think the canopy must of held it in place and stopped a lot of movement.
