Merkin's Build - 2009 SR5 Dual Cab- Need New Tyres?!

Postby Merkin on Sun, 07 Oct 2012 2:23 +0000

So i have been slowly doing a few mods since i got my Lux 12 months ago, and thought i should get my build thread going.
A 2009 SR5 Dual Cab, Manual, Diesel. Picked her up in Sept 2011with 65000km on the clock.
It already had a colour coded ARB Deluxe Winch Bar, Warn XD9000 winch, X-Ray Vision spotties, black duck seat covers and TJM ladder racks. Also had new cooper ATR's and standard SR5 rims.

The day i picked her up:
Image

Very first thing i did was to get rid of the annoying beeps - seat belt and key in iginition. Peace at last!
Next i cut the hooks off the rear seat and had the folding back seat mod completed and somewhere to keep my rifles out of sight!

Next up, with the help of a mate who is a panel beater, was to install a sarafi knock-off snorkel, picked up cheap.

lining up the template.

the point of no return!

finished product.

Then i set about installing a set of Skogs/amitch888's extended diff breathers.

All finished, front and rear.
Image

Not long after,i got a set of Buds Customs Bash plates, they are a bloody tough bit of gear!
Image

Funds on the money tree were down pretty low, so not much got done until june this year, when i'd saved enough to head up to meet Brendan and the boys at Ultimate Suspension at Ingleburn, and got a 2 inch lift installed, along with a Sprint Booster.
Photos from Ultimate:

Out the front of Ultimate, didnt get a before photo unfortunately!
Image

Have only been offroad a couple of times, but the difference is amazing, both on and offroad. It looks heaps better too, as with the bar, winch and bash plates the front end had started to sag pretty badly with only the stock suspension.
The sprint booster is awesome as well, only put it back to the factory setting in the wet and when im offroad!
The after sales service and follow up has been exceptional, and i'd definately recommend Ultimate to anyone thinking about getting a lift installed.

I pulled off the ladder racks and got a hard-lid pretty cheap. I dont think it looks too bad without the roll bar, and i was just after something a bit more secure to throw my snowboard in etc, and not have to worry about it when parked in a car park etc. Sealed up the tail gate with rubber adhesive from clark rubber, which works really well.
Image
Image

have tried to make the front of the lid water tight, but it still lets a bit of water in around the mounting brackets, something i can live with until i get a canopy.

While i was getting the suspension done, i went and got a GME TX3540 UHF and AE4018k Aerial from RYDA communications in Petersham. They price matched an ad id seen online, so was pretty happy with their service.
Image

Then i had a go at my first 12volt install - probably childs play to those who are good at this sort of thing, but new to me. With the help of this forum i got it done in a couple of hours, the hardest part being getting the dash fascia around the cigarette lighter out!

Image

checking i had the right wire
Image

Image

pretty poor photo - but i mounted the box on a piece of angle iron on the passenger side footwell, there was a spare bolt there i just hooked it onto. I did get an extension speaker but havent had to use it yet.
Image

got a cheap $4 bracket from bunnings and spent a good half hour bending it to get the right shape. the bracket needs a coat of black paint to make it fit in a bit better, but pretty happy with it.
Image

Got a Warn full recovery kit from autobarn on special a couple of months ago, but have only used the tree trunk protector so far... came with 3 shackles, winch extension strap, snatch strap, snatch block, tree trunk protector, gloves and a crappy bag! not bad for $199.

The latest addition is a Ridge Ryder air compressor. Havent heard much about them, but with a 2 year warranty and it was on special at supercheap, it'll keep me going until i can afford (one day!) on board air and a locker or two!
anyone have any experience with Ridge Ryder stuff??
Image

i've got a LED reverse light from 4wdsupplies but havent got around to hooking it up yet.

So that it so far. Plans for the future, (but majorly affected by lack of funds) include: sliders, canopy, new tyres and rims, rear bar, dual batteries, fridge, and maybe one day, air lockers!
cant thank this forum enough and several of the members and sponsors i have sent PM's to for all the help i have received along the way.

Been a while since I've had time to do much to my lux, but got around to installing my auxiliary reverse light (a twin led light) the other weekend- I purchased the light from forum sponsor 4wdsupplies.

I must make special mention ( and thanks) to forum member rocket55 for the wiring diagram.

Took me a couple of hours- could be done in half hour but I stuffed around a fair bit ( I.e solded wires and then realised I hadn't put the heat shrink on first etc- total amateur!)
Throws a great deal of extra light and would recommend doin this mod!

Equipment etc

Location of the reverse switch wire, located behind the glovebox, it's the yellow wire, third from the top- you can double check with a multi meter whilst engaging/disengaging reverse.

So my clutch was on the way out, and the thrust bearing had gone, so I got the guys at Ultimate to send me a heavy duty 4terrain clutch. Got it installed last Wednesday, and haven't had a chance to try it offroad as yet, but feels nice and solid and grabs a fair bit earlier than the original clutch.

Also picked up a second hand tunit chip off fleabay last week. Have only had it in a week but the difference was instant! Quicker off the mark, and picks up a lot quicker when you put your foot down- great for overtaking as there is next to no lag. Fuel economy seems to have improved but ill have to go through a couple of tanks before I can really tell. The SR5 dash computer is saying ill get about an extra 90km (using the dist til empty measurement)
Ill be interested to see the difference when towing a trailer or horse float. I've only had it on setting 5 so far, it goes up to 9!

Re: Merkin's Build - Need New Tyres!!??

Postby Merkin on Sun, 04 Aug 2013 5:56 +0000

Next on the agenda is new tyres. The current Cooper ATR tyres have done approx 65,000km and are about stuffed.
Im leaning toward BFG KM2's in 31x10.5x15, but have been told the 32x11.5 will fit the SR5 rims.
i'd love to go to a 16inch rim, but cant really afford it at the moment, so will stick to the standard SR5rims.
what are peoples thoughts on km2's on the road in the wet?
ive read a fair few of the other threads, everyone that is running the km2's seems pretty happy with them, plus tempe/st george tyres have pretty good deals on them at the moment....
decisons decisions...........

Hi Merkin,

Nice looking ute.......I'm currently running the km2's and they are not slippery in the wet at all. I have done 40 k on them and will buy another set when I wear them out. I have previously used other popular brands of tires and can't say that I would speak very highly of them.

Good luck with the build. :-)

Two places i called were cheaper than Tempe over the phone.

Bob Jane will price match and then take 10% off at the moment so iv been told.

A mate is going the KM2's aswell on his prado.

Good to see people attempting wiring and actualy doing a good job.
Some forums scare me with the quality of 12v work. Must be somthing about hilux owners functioning on somthing called logic lol.

good job mate.

Cheers guys.
Ended up with a set of KM 2's in 32x11.5x15.
The lux looks soo much better with a decent set of tyres on it! Got them sent down from Brisbane (not parallel imports either!) and after getting a local tyre place to install and wheel align I was still $100 better off per tyre than buying them locally! Hoping to go for a quick drive on a couple of tracks tomorrow - should be interesting given all the rain we've had in the last 2 weeks!

Ill try and get some better photos over the wkend!

Re: Merkin's Build - 2009 SR5 Dual Cab- All Over......

Postby Merkin on Sat, 19 Nov 2016 8:11 +0000

So I've been a bit quiet of late.
Basically thought I'd better finish this thread before I start my 2016 thread..

My 2009 sr5 manual diesel served me extremely well.
I had a custom steel tray and alloy canopy made up and it worked great. Only negative was it was a bit heavy once fully loaded- you can fit a tonne of gear in these! Also put a Lovells GVM 3300kg upgrade to handle the extra weight (legally).

All going along nicely til she met her end on a very average, wet dirt road (stock route) in a remote part of the NT.

Image

I walked away without a scratch on me, so I was pretty lucky. Material things can be replaced, it was insured, and I'll hopefully take delivery on a 2016 hilux sometime in the next fortnight.
Looking forward to following the new build ups and becoming an active forum user once again!

I'll throw a few photos of the lux before she met her end....
