Bad news today...

My car is an August 2008 build. Your probably thinkin, yeah that's great Dan, so freakin what??

Well... Back in August 2008, Mr Toyota decided to go from the crappy old 260mm clutch plate design to a 280mm unit. After market clutch manufactures don't make heavy duty clutches for the later model Hilux's yet. That means I'm stuck with a stock spec replacement. :(

Fortunately I've been able to stop the clutch from slipping by retuning the Chip back to tune 4 and cutting the power back a bit. All is not lost but I'm not sure how it'll go if I hit the mud with it tomorrow...

not sure if that is correct mate. I have an early 2011 Lux and I've previously been quoted an aftermarket clutch

Who from???

I can get an aftermarket clutch no worries but not a heavy duty one.

Maybe look at a Prado Clutch too. I know they are a bit bigger so maybe Toyota went to the Prado clutch in your year model? You would have thought the aftermarket companies you have been talking to would know if it was the case and mentioned it. Josh (Noidea) put a Prado cluch in his lux.

Cheers,

Chris.

I've been talking to Brendon as well. It's his diligence that's brought us to this point so far. If my car was a month older I'd be sweet.
I just had a read through Josh's build and his is an 07' so his would have started with the 260mm clutch and 15mm over would be the Prado at 275mm. Mine in a 280mm.... I'm not sure what that means but I'll definitely look into a bit more.

Thanks lads!

Dan.

Clutch Industries have just released a 4Terrain HD clutch for the later model Hilux's so I'm getting one of those through Brendon @ Ultimate Suspension (It's true what people say, the guy's a legend). Should have it next week with a bit of luck

Re: Dan's 08' SR5 - Clutchin it...

Postby clb008 on Sat, 24 Nov 2012 4:57 +0000

I had similar issues with clutch slipping after installing a after market chip (ChipIt), Petrol Injection, Safari Snorkle Kit, & 3" Exhaust on my 2010 Hilux D4D. First session on the beach and the clutch smoked within seconds. I talked with a few guys here in Brisbane and I got connected with NPC (Nick's Performance Clutch). The bell housing in the Hilux does not offer alot of room, the guys from NPC redesigned the fly wheel and they were able to fit a Exedy Safari Tuff Clutch from a Late 90's Toyota Land Cruiser 4.2 I6 1HZ (from memory TYK-6869ST). John Tate Automotive did the install in 2010 (5000km on the Hilux). At the time of the install John had done ~3 Hilux clutch upgrades. Since 2010 I have put another 32,000km on that clutch, many km on the beach and one trip up the cape towing a off road trailer. Hit all the trails (CREB, Frenchmen's, South & North Old Telegraph Track, & Palmer River Gold Mine) I have never had any issues with the clutch and it is well worth the upgrade. With any engine performance upgrades or with the install of 32" tires a clutch upgrade is a requirement.

Cheers for that clb. I'll keep it in mind if I have issues with the next one. I'm still waiting for it but as long as I get it in before I move l'll be happy.

While I'm waiting for all the cool stuff to arrive I've made a start on knocking up some sliders...

It's off to a good start.

Thanks mate! It goes without say that the forum has helped a lot with what mods to do. I'd like to have a go at a rear bar. What I've got in mind is going to take some work though...
I saw a Patrol, last trip, that had a rear quarter chop and then had a bar integrated into where the panel used to be. I think it'd be a great way to keep the stock shape while adding protection and maintaining or maybe even improving the departure angle.

Yeah I killed a couple too. I found low RPMs and lots of oil help. Goes slower, but can save some money in the long run.

Those are looking pretty good too! What size pipes and wall thickness are you using?

I was trying to go as slow as I could :P 18v makita cordless in first gear and still modulating it with stacks of cutting fluid on it. Thinking next time ill just hold it flat in first and ease it through.

I'm using 40mm nominal, heavy wall so 48mm OD with a 4mm wall. The RHS is the same.

I had the day off today so I did a bit more work on the sliders. The first one didn't go so well due to the black paint that was on the tube not agreeing with the MIG. I'm no welder either, this was my first time using one since high school but with a bit more prep work the second one turned out ok. Not so much 'sculpting' required. :P

Should look pretty good with at least a coat of primer.

The mounts are going to the tricky part. Not sure how to do them exactly.
