It's not without it's niggly issues... Needs resetting after any sort of rally cross driving, the clamps aren't as good as they need to be. The paint (apparently PPG - I doubt it) doesn't like mud and stains easily. The side window latches aren't very good and need tightening and adjustment every now and then. It's a nice looking canopy (when the rear wing isn't snapped off it) and its still got one of the highest weight limits around but it's not the best. It's not as refined as some others and doesn't have as many features but it was one of the cheaper ones.

I must look like a rude bugger! Sorry jono, I had a family and kinda walked off the map for a while there

Not much has happened to the car besides reapirs really.. Put an ARB battery tray and a second battery in with a very basic Jaycar dual battery wiring kit. It's got a voltage sensing relay in it so when the start battery reaches a set voltage she wires in the aux as well to give it some charge.

John (the roo) came round one weekend to swap out my worn injectors with a new set of baileys injectors and give me some hands on mechanical tutoring with servicing the car to a higher level :D We also resealed the rear diff and changed out some sagged rear springs with some new stockies.

Oh yeah.. how could I forget.. also staying up until the wee hours of the morning cleaning all the black gunge from the intake manifold, the head and EGR system ready for the next morning. What a %*^# job...

A few weeks ago I put the Cal off-road 3" rears in and had the front wound up to 3" to match. Another road force balance of the muddies, a wheel alignment and she was feelin pretty good. Apart from the low speed tail shaft vibration I'm getting now. I've had the centre bearing dropped as far as it can go to keep the 3 degree angle out of the box and it has improved but it's still not perfect. I'm guessing I'll have to look into castor wedges for the rear next..

I managed to smash up my old tub to the point where people must have thought I was blind and driving backwards everywhere so I snapped up a local tub and canopy combo for bugger all $$. The canopy needed some lovin but I flipped it for a nice little profit to put towards more mods ;)

Image

Consequently I took the SJS off to give it a workover as well. The only place I could find in Brisbane that would do anything with a fiberglass canopy wanted $1200 to do half a respray and repair the wing so I thought screw that, I'll by more gear and have a go at it myself! I bought a nut-sert tool and a fibre glass repair kit to repair the broken wing mounts and a nice little spray gun in a Devilbiss SGK 600. That's this weekends project: to respray it and refit it to the tub and do some wiring if I've got time.

Until very recently....

Before lift:

After lift:

Image

The next week after putting the lift in, I took it out to Ripley on the way home from to work to see how she'd go and it was going well.. Right until I wondered what the clunking in the front end was that I could hear..
Snapped the LH sway bar link first time out... spewin!

Image

I'm super gun shy now.. which sucks because I've built it to be driven and I never had a problem with the front set at 1". Is putting a 3" MR lift in and snapping sway bar links a regular thing? anyone?

Last week I took the plunge and went up to see Matt at Just Autos..

Image

enuf said.. hehehe!

And yes Jono, I'm still in Brisbane, for 5 more weeks then I'm moving back to Newcastle.

Cheers!!

I forgot.. I got one of those Denso snorkels as well. They're a good bit of gear!

I'll be up for a new turbo soon too. My theory in getting the Monster Max ECU was future proofing for when things wear out and then upgrading them but not so soon... The car sounds like it's got a slide whistle stuck in it now.

Everyone loves pictures!

I think it was only 300ish for a set of sliding sway bar links from monster rides.
Well worth it! A bit noisy offroad when sliding but fix on road. Best of both worlds!!

I should have thought about those when I went to buy a replacement but I rushed and just got it done to get the car back on the road. Riding in the rain wasn't much fun :P

Everyone was all like "just take the sway bar out" but I was trying to keep it at least borderline legal.

I started the respray on the canopy yesterday and turned the garage into a makeshift spray booth. I've had some issues with the base coat today though. Image
I was doing the second coat and I thought it was going on really well but then this popped up:Image

I'm sanding these areas back and I'll re-prime it tomorrow. I'm thinking I'll leave a bit more time between coats next time.

Wow.. Haven't touched this thread for awhile lol

Turns out I needed a shit load more primer to stop this bubbling happening. It got there in the end and turned out pretty good.
Image

Since then...

Fitted some BDG +15% injectors then picked up a S2 G-Turbo and HPD front mount intercooler, fitted that myself and took it back to Matty for a tune. Pulled a respectable 226HP ATW and somewhere near 640nm but the Safari HD was struggling to keep up.
Image
Back to Newie and had the boys at Adam's Auto Fix fit a new NPC clutch kit - with accumulator bypass line. Solid as a rock!

All things were going well... until..
Image
Destroyed my gearbox... went to 360 Gearbox and diffs in Melbourne for a good one to replace it with. Decided to spend the extra on their 'development prototype' gearbox. Absolute disaster... could do 113 in 5th at 1300 RPM so basically geared to do 300 kph IN A DIESEL HILUX!! First gear was the same ratio as the old 2nd gear and close ratio 2nd and 3rd... useless! Long story short, I drove a 1000ks to Melbourne (most of it with 3 and a half forward gears) to get a tow pack gearbox swapped in.

Swapped out the high flow injectors for some new stock ones (if anyone is looking for a performance set of injectors) Then took it back to Matt for a tune.. Went through 2 more turbo's on the Dyno.. Had a new S2 Gturbo sent to me which I then fitted and still haven't had tuned :P It's going fine lol

Added a HPD catch can kit...
Image

Full stereo build with a beautiful Kenwood DDX917WS, Focal Polyglass splits, Alpine amps and prefab Soundstream sub. I've got 72 Sqm of Dynamat to install at some stage but that'll be when it's a bit warmer so it's more pliable.

Image Image Image Image

Put in a 2 gauge pillar pod with some slick Autometer C2 gauges (Boost and Pyro)

Image

Replaced the crappy ARB fog lights with some Stedi ones and replaced the old light bar with one from Stedi as well. The necessitated the relocation of the winch control box so it's now living on a bracket in the right hand side of the bullbar in front of the bumper mount rail.

Image

Next.. It's back to suspension again. The MR stuff is had it after 5 years and stuff all work for what it was designed to do but so be it. Onwards and upwards.

I'll add some pics soon.

It didn't turn out too bad for a home job in the end.

The Stedi's are the tits.. nice bright, sharp edge beam that lights up the sides easily as well as the old OE ones and the lightbar... :o
