I think that ARB vent cost about $75 - pretty good investment if you havnt got something already
Have seen some vent options with a built in water scupper for less than half the price - muller vents
Dunno how well the cheaper options work but I reckon I should get a sales job with ARB

An ARB vent is definitely on the list of things to get Don't worry about getting a job at ARB, given your build just start your own modification shop.

I might just do that

I closed the vent and hit it with about 20psi with the gerni

It held up okay, no water in the canopy but water did get past the thin upper vent seal.
Installation instructions state using extra sealant if going thru extreme wet conditions so will do this. The lower seal between the vent and canopy was water tight - very thick and compressable.

The sail track stood up well too


The track has an adhesive seal on the bottom but is on the thin side so will add some sealant or extra foam rubber before the wet season. Pooled water evident when removed


The rubber feet for the roof rack bars appear to do the job. Makes a good seal on the marine hooding. A drop of water fell off the rubber foot when removed , other spots are weld splatter showing thru from underneath. Could still add some sealant around the holes

Early this year I was in a rush and added too much flash lube while filling up.
I think I might have inadvertently doubled recommended dose. No big deal ...I thought
After about 5 minutes a code was thrown - rough idle then stall.
Still in a hurry and needing to get somewhere I just primed the fuel filter. It started again and went for about 100m before stalling again. Submitting to defeat I called for a tow
Got towed back home - not wanting to pay workshop fees I looked how I could drain the tank myself - all 76L
I looked up how this could be done without an inline pump on forums, youtube etc.
Some good ideas there but the simplest is usually the best

Heres what I did and what I would do again if out bush:










Images are self explanatory - primed about 100 pumps to get the affected fuel out of the line then again after adding fresh fuel

Reused the affected fuel diluting 50% with no further codes

Can't see ya pic but all good. What flash lube was it? And what was the actual issue?

It was Flash Lubes diesel conditioner. After adding too much additive the engine started to run like it was on one or two cylinders. No power, very poor response when trying to accelerate, eventual limp mode and stall.
I forget the code number but correlated to "rough idle".

So - being careful not to use certain key words to any would-be fuel theives, here are the missing images. Its tricky to get in there but possible

Used it to increase lubricity. To be honest, I didnt notice any significant difference.
It ran a tad quieter, used marginally less fuel... but not always.
Dunno if the overdose would have caused any long term damage.

I just put fuel doctor into my X5 to see if it would make any noticeable difference before I ran it through my hilux. I've had a few bad tanks full of fuel so I figured I'd give it a go. The BMW is my guinea pig

Says something about the lux when one would rather try a new additive on the beamer first
Fuel doctor is good stuff. I use it all the time to keep a moisture free tank
Never had problems with it.... it let's you double dose

Yeah, if only had one car, it would be the hilux but the BMW is a much better town and highway car.

I got it cheap as people are too scared to work on them and they get the prestige tax when you need to get something fixed. Fortunately parts are cheap and there plenty of forums discussing the various problems.

Can the X5 tow?

Having two things to tow I put some thought into about a couple more things.

First was a torque converter lock up kit.
Got mine on special some time back from wholesale automatics.
Its a good kit, largely plug and play but where to stick the bloody thing?
Instructions were generic, not specific to the hilux.

Anyway, after feeling around for what room there was and what gets hot etc I found this spot









There is also a resistor that needs to be placed on a metal surface. I mounted it on a bracket I bent up for the UHF
Did a haul towing about 1.2T for 800km. Averaged 11 km/L @90km/hr average over the total distance

Hi Mark,
The lock up kit is good for the few reasons I have noticed:
- Lowers trans temps. Havnt ran over 90 degrees on highway (going off scan gauge)
- No hunting for gears or down shifting with slightest accelerator input
- Fuel economy
Things to watch out for is when coming to a stop make sure the TC switch isn't engaged as the engine starts to shake fighting a stall - (true to the name suggesting the converter is locked up)
If you put your foot down, go up a decent hill or slow down it will still shift down a gear.
Can still take a little work to find 5th sometimes but much easier than stock, just need to ease off right foot for it to kick in

All in all, a very good investment if towing regularly

Hiluxxury - we will need to see a pic of that... just cant picture an offroad camper trailer being towed by an X5

Here ya go mate, it tows the tvan at the speed limit anywhere I take it. Uses about 14ltr/100km towing and about 9 any other day.

You'd be surprised where an X5 can go. On a trip out to the East MacDonnell we ventured out on track near Trephina Gorge only to be followed by a new X5 complete with the big alloys and low profile tyres. The guy did park it about a kilometre from the end of the track as it got fairly gnarly, and then he made his family walk the rest of the way. The appearance of a showroom spec X5 out there certainly had everyone talking
