Thanks man. Mostly that top view cos my bar is custom and my winch etc has most of the real estate in there.

Hahaha - Radfowls? Rather fitting
Got genuine CV boot clamps tightened up and the new lower strut spacers (no offset) which moves the strut forward just 3mm.
Good news is that they clear the boot clamps at full extension. No more CV leaks either :D
Bad news is that the lower spring and base now fowl on the sway bar when articulating.
So at the moment the sway bar is off until I return from the tracks.

Will figure it out when I get back but at the moment Im thinking of reverting back to the offset spacers and grinding a couple mm off the lower strut stem where it catches the boot clamp ear.

Preparing for a trip to Kalumburu...
Having moved the trans cooler to make way for the FMI I saw that some US trucks mounted coolers in the wings.
Mounted mine just below the right headlight

Image]
A couple of brackets + one rivnut into the framework - will paint up brackets when I get time

Image
Image
Still deciding what to do about that trans line - its well protected by lower wing deflectors.
Just looks vulnerable to stick intrusion
Image

While the bar was off - finally got around to droping it down 10mm. This bar was off a pre-facelift 05-11 model so it sat too high. The bar would flex and hit the flarlets in turn hitting the flares, messing up the wrap etc.
The 33's would also scrub the bar under articulation
Image
Image

I could deal with that but now with the FMI the winch wouldnt fit. So - out it came.
New mounting brackets needed welding on as there was no more room for adjustment
Image

Will see how it holds up - Wasnt overly impressed with the heat distortion. That should be flush :?
Image

As the bar got lowered 10 or so mm the wing ends also got tucked
Image

Happy with the gap and where the wing ends terminate.
The top tube used to extend into the wheel arch be about 1/2 inch longer

Winch is going to have to sit this trip out - waiting for service parts, de-rust drum, re-grease etc

First day on the Gibb made it just short of the Kalumburu /Mitchell Plateau turn off
Road up to here is in good condition
Image

Usually after a few hundred k on the Gibb the back of the tub is covered, and drawn in a load of dust inside
Image

I always cover all the gear in crappy old blankets. They are usually encrusted with a coat of dust after travelling any decent track at speed. Not looking forward to the pindan and bulldust I did something about it this time...

Cheap and rough but 99% effective
Image
Image

Even after trailing behind triple trailers, following and overtaking multiple vehicles with camper trailers theres barely a trace of dust 8-)

Image

More to come

Totally agree - the simple things can be the best :D
Haha, yep picked up that winch years ago for a reasonable price. Have since seen a few youtube clips on how to break it down. Havnt yet pulled it apart but not expecting anything too nasty as its still running and free spooling well. A little prevention now, time saved later etc

Back tracking a little here: Stopped off at Bindoola falls on the first day just past Home Valley Station

about a 6 foot handbag warming up in the sun down there

A sneaky camp spot at Dawn creek
Image
Spent a quiet afternoon under that tree in the background throwing the ball into the creek for the dogs, reading a 4X4 mag and enjoying a couple of cold ones.

Image
Image
Dogs had a good swim chasing the ball then the long day caught up with them - perfect spot to chilax next to the creek

I was out there a few weeks ago, it was good to see the falls flowing (even if it was just flowing).

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the trip.

Hadnt seen a frill neck for a long time
Image
The cane toads havent taken a good hold near Kalumburu yet.
Also saw a decent sized goanna on the way into a waterhole
Was good to see toad free creeks and rivers up there

The road got gradually more corrugated as got up onto the plateau.
It got pretty slow going and rough past Theda station

Past a triple trailer with a dozer that got stuck in the middle of the track where a soak hadn't quite dried up
Didnt stop to rubber neck or take a photo on the way in but this was the aftermath left on the way out
Image

I had a moments inattention and smacked into the only bolder in some long grass on the way into my next camp site.
A quick inspection all round and under gave the driveline the all clear
Took the brunt on the drivers side lower control arm mount. Could have been so much worse

Took about 1.5hours just to do 10km side track in to the waterhole mentioned. A rough track that I lost several times
Image

But well worth the effort

The high country looks awesome this time of year. Been too long since I saw snow
I had overnight lows of 20-17 degrees around Kalumburu and 12 on the Gibb though.... had to put on a bennie.

Spot the car - that was camp for a couple nights

Spent a morning fixing up bits and pieces
Image
Got this to a point where I felt confident I wouldnt be doing any further damage driving it
Image

Dogs thought they would go for a swim then come back to supervise my work
Image

On the way in I had to make a sharp left hand turn into a creek crossing
Left wheel went up, right wheel down and PING - heard what sounded like something not so good
ABS line again
Image

No soldering iron out bush
Image
A bit of insulation tape to separate the wires and some shrink tubing did the trick
Glad I took some of this tube
Image
Image
Zip ties the line well out of the way until I figured out what was happening
Image
Image

Fast forward a week
When I got home I replicated the conditions - left wheel up on a 50cm block, slowly turned wheel left and found the problem
Image
Image
Conclusion - aftermarket UCA's required. The offset bush worked fine on my last setup - not this time.

After the bolder strike this happens
Image

Need install new bush, bend mount back to position, fit UCA's, get an alignment, retest

Back to Kalumburu
Cheap ar5e wire used on solar panel needed reconnecting
Image

Trusty old camp chair fell apart - nothing a few rounds f duct tape cant fix
Image

What else - oh yeah, had to fix awning pole that blew out in a gust of wind and re-tighten UHF antenna that copped a flogging on the corrugations

Spent the afternoon swimming and enjoying the complete absence of any other campers

Carried on up to Kalumburu
They ask tourists to leave their caravans at Drysdale Station
This is the reason why the road gets messed up:
Image

Fuel reasonably priced - thought it would cost $3+
Image

Stopped off to get a permit - $50. The rangers do a pretty good job maintaining the track and cleaning up rubbish

Carried in thru to Honeymoon Bay
Image
$15 a night for
To get away from everyone drive around at low tide to the right hand side of the beach.
Had that whole stretch to myself

One of the crossings up to Pago. Walked this one
Image

Old USAF fuel dump
Image
A bit of history still visible
Image

Whats left of the old Pago mission
Image

One of the rock art sites
Image
Image

On the way out one of the Station trucks couldnt get enough traction up a jump-up
I pulled up - he asks me "Mind giv'n me a tow"
I look at him sideways and think... :? seriously? Thats a triple trailer Mack with a f*^!en dozer on the back
As it turns out I know the bloke and his missus. I found his phone on the road some months back
He said he usually gets a run up but the jump up is so pot-holed he couldnt take it at speed.
"Just need a little pull up"
He backs up"down the hill, drops a trailer but keeps the dozer on
"Low and slow mate"
Hand my phone out the window to his wife - thinking 'photos or it didnt happen'

Image
Image
Image
Image
Image

Not the first time a Toyota has pulled him up or out of a fix

Obligatory pic

Image
About the clearest I've ever seen ELQ range

Used 150L.
3 X 20L flexi Jerries and 20L top up at Drysdale Station
Averaged 11.1L/100km over the trip

Hey DB, love the build mate.
Can I ask where you got your fender flare extensions from? My tyres protrude about an inch from my fender and don't want to go as big as the jungle flares I've seen.
