Have been toying with an idea of a semi-permanent solar panel for a while.
The roof rack wind-fairing solar panel looks cumbersome and out of place when the RTT is off.

Pulled finger a while ago, removed the rack and did the roof.
Not worried about the seam overlap up there - easiest way for a novice to get around the antenna

hey db whats easiest way to spin my coils so that they don't contact my uca ?? im running dobinsons mrr gear

rds - these coil overs have a spinning coil seat.
I found the radflo coils can turn when adjusting the height. Not sure if the MRR is similar.
Looking at images of the MRR settup it has a rubber tophat bush that will make truning the coil impossible.

If running OEM UCA's disconnect the UCA balljoint and hold it up while adjusting coilover height.
Not sure about the dobinsons coil diameter but it may be a game of trial an error adjusting ride height so that the UCA misses (slots into the coil gap) when at full droop - an arduous process to setup but will be fine thereafter.
Mine is set just over 2" and fits perfect

Because the front of roof is contoured on 2 planes and the panel can only bend on one plane at a time it sticks up about 10mm on the sides. Sikaflex 221 doesnt give the neatest finish when removing the tape - sticks to it like a bastard.

A scrap of left over vinyl on the roof and back of cab holds the cable.

No 'problems' as such.

I need durability with the roads I travel on - my last suspension kit only lasted 15,000km before top hat bushes flogged out and were replaced only for the coils to sag 2" after doing the Tanami - average speed well below 70km/h never exceeded 80km, always driving like granddad

I was advised by a forum sponsor that aftermarket UCA balls joints can fail early so went with the advice to use the superpro bush kit. Apparently OEM ball joints are strong and have longer durability.

The difficulty is that you need to take the OEM UCA's to a person who knows what they are doing and has the right equipment to do it. Its not just a case of having a press to install the offset bush kit.

I got mine pressed in Darwin - the mechanic said he knew what he was doing but 5 hours wait later I had my doubts.

The OEM UCA's with offset bush kit had good clearance with my previous after market coil-overs.
However, I just had to orientate the new coilovers so that the UCA's wouldn't bind with the ridge of the coil.

I still saved a few $ using the offset kit but at the expense of time. Might not be an issue for others.

Fair enough - thanks for that. I'm looking at the options for my lux, I have a press etc but I can easily see how it isn't as simple as guessing an offset and then getting an alignment.

Hopefully your current setup will last some distance.

Try the worthe product ms1. Its a windscreen urethane and smoothes really good when wiped wet with prepsol.

legend thanks heaps mate popped into the suspension joint and they did it for me for nothing :) :) now it's time to ditch the sway bar

It finally stopped raining long enough for roads and racks to open but still plenty of water around

Is that silver Gaffa tape you put around the edges of your roof solar panel? Do you get any wind noise through the panel?

I put a strip of vinyl wrap around the edge which extends about 40mm under the panel so that when I pull it off the adhesive will come off with the vinyl.

No noise at all from the panel - no gaps, no loose edges

So the sikaflex is stuck to the vinyl and vinyl tape to roof ? Is that strong enough? How do you know the sikaflex will come off with the vinyl take when pulled off?

The 3M vinyl adhesive is very strong - no chance of lifting if the surface is well preped.
However this is not permanent. Solar panels down rate over time and the vinyl is removable for up to 3 years.
I will remove all the vinyl in a couple years so will be left with as new paint

Good luck on the "As New Paint"
Big pin stripes and dents seem to get through the Armour plating somehow ;)
Love the green look though and the solar panel looks great
