Its good gear, worth the wait, took me ages just to get a front bash plate sorted when I was doing fifo.
I think half the problem is they are just to busy

Nice rockery and water feature mate. Assuming you have side access to get your Hilux past your Colour bond fence. Poor old Rocket55 would be jealous.

Auto Locker received - now what

Postby DeadlyBeast on Sat, 15 Mar 2014 12:52 +0000

Sure do feel very fortunate to have all this country up here to explore.
This arrived to help me get to some more less-travelled places:

Very impressed with the service from Locktup 4X4 - Only took a few days for locker to arrive in AUS from the US and a couple further weeks in the post to get up here.

Undecided if I will go for a 4.1 regear...

auto with 33's?

I would always re-gear if possible. gives you more control off-road, not to mention returning power and fuel economy

Yep - an auto running 32's at the moment. May run 33's if I regear but as the price of fuel keeps increasing its probably worth running 4.1 - likely pay its self off in a year. I'm paying over $1.80/L already :x

Spare Wheel Stone Chips

Postby DeadlyBeast on Tue, 18 Mar 2014 6:57 +0000

Anyone else travel gravel roads and enjoy the stone chip look on your under tub spare?
This was the good spare - the old one nearly lost all paint around the lip and rusted to hell. At least pindan dirt hid the rust :?

Image

Working on a preventative measure for the new spares - will post pics soon...

Keen to see. Planning on making a leather/fabric wheel cover or more like a guard?
Cheers,
Jay

Stone Shield

Postby DeadlyBeast on Wed, 19 Mar 2014 7:21 +0000

You guessed it JB - a guard of sorts.
This has bugged me for a while. I will be doing a lot of off road gravel/dirt/scrub tracks over the next 6 months so time to get it done.

I thought of just putting a cheap fabric wheel cover on but this would wear thru where the stones hit it. A wheel cover would also fill up with water and fall off from the weight after leaving creek/river crossings.
What I need is a solid shield that can be held in place.

Take one new undamaged wheel
Image

Alfoil several times
Image

Liberal coating of silicon - or wax
Image

Cover with 2 layers high density woven fibreglass cloth
Image

Add resin to each layer
Image

Let set...

Got the idea from another NH member who made a fibreglass sub box using the deep side of a wheel. Easy :D

Will trim, cut centre hub, drill wheel nut holes, coat with tub liner on the exposed side and add thin backing of some sort to prevent vibration abrasion to wheel paint. Any ideas of what to use other than foam tape?
