Good point Crit
I want to keep the rear window clear so I can still see out the back and keep an eye on the dogs when they get chucked in there. That said I could still add a top rail and sides... will makes some additions to the SKU when I get back

Months of planing and ordering parts, welder, consumables, etc
Despite the thousands of km to freight, the bar work arrived incredibly quick thanks to WA bending.
Image

Welder turned up quickly too
Image

Spool gun took a while to arrive
Image

Given remote location disposable gas cylinders seemed to be a good option...
Image

Here's the problem
Image

Took over 3 weeks to wait for the disposable gas bottle valve to arrive :x
Somehow have to get that gas flow gauge to fit on to the disposable gas bottle regulator and then get the supply hose into the welder. No adaptors supplied :?

I dont like my chances of getting adaptors any time soon

DB's Cage Canopy Build

Nice to have new toys but only if you can play with them! How about a regulator like this: https://www.hampdon.com.au/disposable-g ... 2-bossweld

Good move with the pre bent pipe work, do you only need one of them?

Yeah, I ordered one with the regulator gauge but ended up with this one without :x
It took weeks for it to arrive - customer support has been painful. Customer support is outsourced to another country and kept giving BS replies. Company wont be getting any rave review here
Have gone thru town looking for adaptors and the like. Think it will be easier just to order a new one.
Thanks for the link - have used Hampdons before and while not fast they send what you order

Very happy with the bar work though. Yep, had to get prebent - no one in town here had a mandrel for this.
A bit hard to see in the pics but theres two 50 x 5mm hoops

My next welder apparently doesnt need a spool gun. You can run the aluminum wire straight even though it has 5m hand piece ;)

Is there a total tools or similar anywhere near you? You can buy bottles outright heaps cheaper than renting or using them little disposable ones, they don't last long. Shouldve got a tig and learnt that it's way more "fun"

Bunnings, 200 bucks deposit keep as long as you need it.
About 100 for the gas.

Boc, has 108 bucks for d size bottle for a year with includes 1 refill.

Nearest total tools or bunnings is nearly 1000km away
Freight costs are a killer unless can get 'free post Aus wide'. Even then theres often an additional charge for remote.
Got reasonable freight for 3 disposible bottles ... hindsight is a good thing ;)

Hey thanks banksy. Really appreciate that.
I'm heading to the big smoke in a few weeks so I can duck into a Bunnings and grab a D bottle then.
Wait a minute... Bunnings dont have any in stock
Will try Total tools and BOC

Hey Oggy - good luck with the 5m line. I have the option to swap mine out with teflon liner but unless you keep the line and hand piece straight was told to expect a lot of birds nests

Thanks for the suggestions guys

DB's Cage Canopy Build

Postby Critter350 on Mon, 10 Sep 2018 5:33 +0000

I worked at an ali ship yard for a bit (not as a welder) and most welders were not spool guns.
Teflon liners, u groove rollers and oversized tips. And good wire. https://www.platealloy.com/welders.htm

I wonder if they went for a 3in1 MiG/TIG/Stick inverter welder for $600  ;)
I spoke to a bloke who owned an aluminum boat fab factory - he said 80% of the guns used were spools as they saved time :?

If I was a professional I would have got a dedicated Ally TIG machine. The 185 is a jack of all trades, master of none so to speak. Chose a spool gun as I don't want to be frustrated with the learning curve and time wasted untangling. Fat lot of good that rational did - cant even get the argon from the bottle into the machine yet

I got a tig welder as my mate had a MIG, it's taken me ages to get ok at it, but now it's easy. Gave my neighbour a go the other day who can mig and stick weld really well, he couldn't do it to save himself
