Gull wing canopy WIP Version 1.2

Postby Skog07 on Mon, 23 Jul 2012 8:47 +0000

Here are a couple of WIP pics of my gull wing canopy build up. I just typed up a fairly big post and my fat fingers managed to some how lose the post
Here are the pics.

Ill keep updating this thread as I go along. This is not the final product, ive only used cheap plywood, dexion and tec screws to do a pre fab first. The final product will be Tig welded sheet alloy when I am happy with it. :)
I also have to build a tool rack on the LHS of the canopy as well. Im not going to permanantly set them in. Each side will be bolted in and be albe to removed from the back door as well.
I'll keep updating this thread as time goes on. Feel free to post any comments.
Cheers
Mark

Looks really good Mark, done well there... Nothing beats a setup like that compared to a normal tray/canopy setup!

Coming along and looking real good Mark. Keep on practicing and I might let you fit out mine!
Still waiting to see it in the flesh. Very upset I couldn't get one of Lux's up to Mt Walker but the kids sport Sat and Sun and also had to work Fri,Sat and Sun nights. Catch up real soon.

Thanks Dave. Im really happy with it. At the moment though it held on by a $7.00 ratchet strap...
Hows yours going Ron? Heard you've been moonlighting with Alby? Are you going MW Toolbox? or with your tray builder?

Removed the canopy today for the first time with the jacks supplied.. They are bloody heavy weight over 20kg each.
Wanted to put a rubber liner between the tray and canopy to stop the alloy rubbing against each other.

THe canopy itself has a box section frame underneath. Looks nice and strong with the 3mm floor.
Image
5mm rubber ute liner.

and a shot from the RHS.

Centralised it properly with the headboard as well so it looks alot better than the first time I put it on. Know where the framework now is ubderneath so I can work on the mounting points now.
Cheers

Just ask the dog..
Yeah Warren I fluked it. Bought 6 large draws and 3 small draws, within minutes of getting home and setting it up in the back of the canopy I quickly dashed out and bought a 4th small draw. Used all my 35th birthday Bunnings vouchers :)

How muchy for the Gull Wing canopy itself or the compete rebuild transformation to get it this far....
My ute started out a a Jdeck tub with a tonneau cover over the top and a genuine liner.
Got custom toolboxes made up to fit in the back.
Then found a cheap canopy for sale on here with a tub, fitted that.
Then got the toolboxes modified to suit the new canopy. Fitted liftup windows to the canopy.
Drove around for a few years like that, hated the setup it didnt work...
Removed the uteback and canopy.
Then fitted a tray, as the vehicle became a work vehicle.
Was going to build a gullwing to fit on this never happened.
Then got MW toolboxes to build the canopy 2 years later as I didnt have the time..
Id hate to think how muchy.....

Mark great way to go. If I bought a ute again I would go with this way but might not worry too much about the jack off tray. I drive past MW every day and have learnt to ignore it now but it was hard at first. Its a toolbox heaven inside! my canopy and drawer setup probably owes me $5k or so, and it would be a fair expense to redo it with a tray.

Very nicely done mate, thinking about doing something along the same lines at some stage. The fact that whole thing comes off is awesome which means you can build two of them one for work (tradesman) and one for 4wd camping.
Awesome job man 8-)
