We used 6mm wire
scottsr20 wrote:What do the 2 blue hoses run to and why does one have a valve on it Geoff ?

The one with the valve is a drain and vents through the floor and the other blue hose goes to the enguine bay for the air horn - when I get around to fitting it.

Jake, we got a call just before we boarded the ferry that the DLR was cancelled so we've headed up through the Vic Alps and camped in the bush for last 3 nights, at Omeo tonight in caravan park to do some washing and have hot shower. All is good,

Missed Dargo as the High Plains Road was 'Road Closed' when we came past and the rain is bucketing down today while we head up Mt Kosiosko way. Had to cut a tree off the highway near Orbust today so plenty of adventure, even on the bitumen. Staying in pub in Bombala tonight, not sure where we go from here --- will wait and see what the weather is like tomorrow but it will probably be on bitumen as there is lots of water about.
The compressor has had a work out as we have been on and off the bitumen several times and had tyre pressures up and down a number of times.

Good stuff Geoff, looks like a really well thought out setup.

Just a couple of Q's - how did you end up with water/mud in the transfer? I have an 07 xtra cab.....it is my farm ute, so is always offroad in mud and water (when it rains) just wondering if there is something I need to be keeping an eye out for.

What vehicle are you racing in Safari, any details or still under wraps? I could be wrong but I think sub-regs for moto's state fuel must be in jerry can's......can't be sure about auto's though. Was meant to go over with a mob in 2010 on a moto.....change of dates and work conspired and it didn't happen.

Yes it works really well, quick to set up and quicker to pack away + very comfortable camp for 2 people. Its not too heavy and fully loaded the vehicle is still fairly nimble and gives reasonable fuel economy.
clarkyinaus wrote: how did you end up with water/mud in the transfer?

Not sure how the transfer case filled with water and mud but have since installed breathers that work to the transfer, gearbox and diffs so it wont happen again. Wading through water and mud for 5 hours was the primary cause of the problems
clarkyinaus wrote:What vehicle are you racing in Safari,

I will be service vehicle for Murry Young in his Pajero, last year 5th outright car No 127.
We will then drive back east across the Anne Beadell Highway, so will be a hell of a trip and real test for the Hilux.

As I planned for a trip into Northern Flinders Ranges, I needed to carry a second spare wheel and roof racks are the only option so I did some study but couldn't find much info on fitting one to an extra cab. I chose HD Rhino bars and track but all the baskets looke like they will fall to bits and the platforms are too big and would look like an aeroplane wing mounted on the roof, so I custom made one from 4mm aluminium. Its 900mm square so plenty of room to go up in tyre size, has 3 threaded boss welded underneath with threaded bar to hold the wheel firmly in place.
These can be screwed out leaving a flat bottom on the platform.

Image

If I was to do it again I would order a length of M12 X 1.5 threaded bar and be able to use my spare wheel nuts to fix the wheel down - was working to a dead line so didn't have the time to wait for it to arrive.

Image

The front is the same line as the windscreen so keeps wind drag down a bit and it has only cost about 3/4 litre per 100km in fule economy, not too noisey at highway speed, looks tough.

Image

It's just had a work out in Vic Alps and worked spot on.

Jeeez I'm sorry I missed that. After I pulled the Caytiva out, I drove straight through that hole and up onto the bank - he'll never live this down.
I had good weekend away except the Lorinna Track is still closed, so I drove both ends of it and Borradaile Plains is also closed wor another couple of weeks because of forestry operations so I drove the track backwards up to the closed road, camped in the bush and just wandered out along tracks today, including one very overgrown and washed out bit where it scraped the belly plates for about 100 metres as slipped and slid down it - great fun once I was back on a formed road. Lots of good tracks to drive up on Borradile Planes, so we should plan a trip up there in warm weather.

 Ha ha was a bit of a laugh mate, minutes before Brian got stuck i said to the lads over the UHF that this is pretty much an easy track and this the only spot you could get into any trouble. He was just a meter off following the line i took and fell in a big dip. I hate recovering Patrols they are so faaarkin heavy.. double line pulls back and forth had no luck, so then we loaded up my ute with some rocks to build up around his front tyre... another double line pull and juuuust pulled him out, his front right in the air, my lux dragged forward a meter or so...

Lorrina track still closed? Geez the few residents that live along there must be pissed! How where your brakes after heading down the lemonthyme Rd? man mine where smokin...
Geoff you gotta throw a winch on the front of ya bus with all that solo touring you do... :o

I'll email some more pics of Brian so you can rub it in.....
