Mats 2012 SR dual cab - dual battery

Postby mathew8235 on Sat, 15 Jun 2013 7:03 +0000

Been working on getting a second battery under the bonnet for quite a while now. It started with me knocking up a 3D model of the battery tray. I had seen an ARB tray so its pretty much based on that. I picked up an extra hole or 2 on the wheel arch to help with load.
Image

Did a bit of cardbaord engineering before cutting the tray.
Image

I have access to a laser cutter so I had the tray cut directly from the 3D model I created, out 2mm 304 ST/STL, still need to passivate the welds.
Image

I moved the little computer thing from the fire wall to the side of the tray.
Image

Got the battery in and mounted the circut breaker for heavy gauge wire (16mm2) that I'm running to the tray and and the towbar. I also mounted a small fuse box for future accessories.
Image

I have also bought a Redarc BCDC1220 charger so I am in the process of making bracket for it to mount. I'm going to make a tray for the starter battery with high sides to bolt on the redarc and a little flange to mount the AMI midi fuses, bit like this.

Hey mate, sorry can't supply the trays. I could pass on some drawings if you can find a fab shop with a laser / plasma cutter.

No worries Mathew, it was wishful thinking my part :-)

But yeah, would very much appreciate the plans and measurements, save me heap of time. I got access to sheetmetal plasma cutter at work or angle grinder at home to fab this tray up.

If you could email me the plans etc to runningman@iinet.net.au would be very much appreciative.

Cheers again.

Very tidy battery tray.

How many mounting points do you have ? . Looks like 5 or they could be drainage holes towards the firewall.

Im keen to make one that will not tear my guard open .

(insert clap for some top work mate) :D

I will have to find the drawings and then i will email them.

Yeah I picked up 4 places on the bottom of the tray plus the point on the side. I have left drain holes at all 4 corners and a large cut out in the middle so it is easier to install.

Couple of pics of the new canopy.

Image
I had some blocks made up that I welded to the inside of the canopy so I can add roof racks or a basket later. They are blind tapped holes and I seal welded the outside so no water gets in.
Image
I have added some mesh inside to hold some plastic boxes
Image
I also made up a table out of some checker plate and a ally tarp pole, works a treat.
Image
I laser cut some bracket for my awning that bolt to the blocks that I added to the inside of the canopy
Image
My wiring and lights. Lights are from JGM direct, they have a switch mounted on them and are totally water proof.

Set up at Straddie and Fraser islands recently.

Nice work Matthew. Looking great, nice and tidy work. Those $20 Oates draws from Bunning are the go. Top work mate watching with interest see what other ideas I can pinch off your build and use in my setup.
Happy New Year.
Cheers Mark.

Thanks Mark, I have been watching your canopy build you have some great ideas. Yeah I couldn't go past those draws. I have just installed a reverse camera too, I got one of these from elinz http://www.elinz.com.au/buy/7-rearview-mirror-monitor-12v-24v-reversing-ccd-camera-truck-caravan/R7MI-RV4PIN10M.
I'm a little disappointed with the angle of view from the camera but its better than what I had... I get some pictures up soon.

Re: Mats 2012 SR dual cab - Stainless Water Tank

Postby mathew8235 on Sun, 09 Mar 2014 6:48 +0000

Been busy getting a stainless water tank made and installed. I got my hands on an off cut sheet of 2mm cheap and it worked out I could make a 570Wx900LX120 (almost 60L) and have a couple of baffles. Couple of photos for those interested.

Bits ready to go
Image

Tig welding the tank and baffles.
ImageImage

Cleaned up with some pickling paste
Image

Installed, tap mounted on towbar.
Image

Filler point mounted between cab and tray.

I Like the tank, nice use of space, the only thing I see is the tap will get filled with dust whenever your off-road being at the back of the car and so low like that. Every time you open the tap you will waste some water as it will be dirty , wondering if there is somewhere else you could run the tap?

Probably is a lot of places I could put the tap, not sure I will move it. I'm thinking of connecting a pump at some point and I might put another tap up higher maybe even in the canopy not sure yet.

Thanks, but sorry its a one off, and to be honest without cheap material I was going to just buy a plastic one.
