Car PC arrived today... Wasn't expecting it till late this week...

Both me and a mate got the same unit, so now it beigns...

Started with a clean install of
Windows 7 RC1,
Centrafuse,
OziExplorer,
Adobe and other misc apps like Winrar etc.
BT port splitter app,
ETC...

Need to design up the wiring now although I've got a good head start as my mate has already been through it. The PC comes with some really funky extra's such as external power to control monitors, USB hubs, relays to allow for powering amps etc... and shutting them all down when the power drops to low on the battery...

Will start hacking up my dash this weekend hopefully, was going to get a spare from the wreckers to use and keep the original, but at $130 for the centre plastic after its had bullshit all over it and left in a car with a smashed window.... I think I'll just cut carefully... :D

If anyone knows of a spare centre plastic console from the dash for a few $$'s please let me know...

Quinny, not sure how you will go with Windows 7, Vista is no good so people stick with XP. You may be better off with Win XP. After all, for what you do with a car PC does not put much demand on the features of the OS. Ask around, I paid $50 for my radio console at a wrecker.

Nah.. been running 7 for a week or so now... Its everything Vista was meant to be... runs smooth on the carpc and on my work laptop... will upgrade to the release version early next year when its officially released...

Yeah... I thought it was way to epensive for the console... I reckon a new one is not far of that price..

When you say car pc what is it? Model etc? I assume you are building your own system as opposed to an off the shelf system? Does this work out cheaper does it?

Cheers

Im putting together a bit of a walk through / parts list into a doco and will post up with pics in one hit... all up I reckon less than $1600... so not exactly cheap but will have some great functionality and flexibility to do more as new things come out...

Hey Quinny, nice build up mate, its looking great so far! I am keeping an eye on what you do with the carputa thing, I have a similar project in motion after seeing Rod's rig - it got me all inspired! Windows 7 is definately awesome, even on reasonably low spec hardware.

FYI - Windows 7 comes out to general public Oct 22 this year ;)

Are you going to go for something similar to Rod (RR/ozi explorer) or something different? Are you going use a standard hard drive or solid state?? I know the SSD's are expensive but I like the idea of shock resistant up to 1500G's!!!

Cheers,
Luke

Jeff

After talking about your limp problem I thought I'd list some of the things to tackle.

First, get rid of the crimpon connectors. I have not used any of them in any wires I have joined in my car and especially the Car PC. I have used a soldering iron all the time. Here is a pic of the shrinkwrapped joins I did for my Head unit connector. You can see the red shrink wrap. The black is a bit of insulation tape to keep the wires together.

Image

Some of my better joins on display here mate, I use the hot air gun to shrink it, A hair dryer might do it too. You can get the shrinkwrap from Jaycar, Dick Smith and even Super Cheap.

Second, get a couple of RJ45 Serial port ends and make up a serial cable and eliminate the USB-Serial adapter. Haymans and Ideal Electrical will be cheaper than Jaycar for the cables and fittings. You'll only need about a 5 metre Serial cable that length should be fine, they used to wire terminals with runs of 25 metres. You should be able to google up the Null Modem pinout for the cable. If you really get stuck, I've got a Serial Port monitor here with LED's for all the signals I can send you. You plug it in line with the cable. I might not have the adapters you need any more... eg 9-25 M-F etc.

Awesome mate. Good to see how well the bigger 8" monitor went in. I like the WAP idea, I have thought of it myself, but I have a PCMCIA Wireless card with an external antenna socket on it. I initially tried a concealed antenna but not working that well, I am planning on fitting this external wireless network antenna on the bullbar:

Oh and glad to see I am not the only one with a rat's nest of cables behind the rear seat. I don't know how those audio guys make such clean installs...

From inside I get around 80% + power output from the car.... not sure on range but not fussed either... the DHCP in the router helps with connecting other devices etc... I just run WPS on the router to join the home network... but I'll leave most of the tech jargon for another geekier thread.... :ugeek:
