Hi everyone,

I have been asked a few times now if it was possible to consider allowing most of our forum categories (probably except for the trip section) publicly viewable (read-only) by guest users?

There are some pros and cons for this, here is some that come to mind:

Pros:
1) Google can index our site better, which will mean it'll be found much easier than before.
2) The general public will see what it's about prior to signing up to be able to post.
3) Hopefully new users will search for info first before they post up a question if it already exists.

Cons:
1) Lots of people will lurk the forums and not sign up at all, this will reduce the amount of new members coming on each day.
2) Your posts are viewable by anyone, anywhere without restriction, look at your photos, ideas etc. Which doesn't stop them if they sign up anyways.

I am very interested in your opinion so please cast your vote and possibly give me your feedback by responding to this thread.

i dont think ya should make it public. If they join up yeah no worries, but as you said, you could get a lot of people just reading previous posts, but never actually sign up. As far as coverage goes, if i see another "new" hilux on the other forums, i let them know about this site. Also, i could make up some sort of flyer to give out to other hilux owners at shows/musters. I am sure we can get this site out to more hilux owners, we just need to know where to go.
Would it be possible to get advertising on 4x4 magazine web sites? I think that if we get the 'NewHilux.net' name out in the right spots, then we are guaranteed to get more members signing up.

Anyway, thats just my thoughts and ideas.

I think it would be more encouraging for potential new members if they could have a look around first, much more generous and open. If they're decent types and have anything to contribute they'll want to become members after they see how much valuable information is available here.

just scouted a new member from another forum. Told him about the site, and he said as soon as i mentioned tips and tricks, which includes ignition and seat belt beeper remover, he was in.

keep an eye out for KWTRUK, he's the bloke i told about the site

Hi Dave and members,
I would support it as read only because once they have seen what is available on the site I believe they would be happy to join anyway. As read only it would keep out undesirable comments anyway.

Nah - make them join to read I reckon - theres a heap of inactive members already, that only come to browse etc. If it interests ya that much, you will join to see the whole lot.............

Just an opinion here, I've been on a few other forums where you can see the original post on thread, but not the replies until you join. I think this would be a great way to entice/tease people. They'll see some of the content (plus google indexing).

I agree with shrek, then they get an idea of the content and if they want to know more they can join.

Anyone who thinks that anything they do on the net is private is kidding themselves

Hmm good one Shrek.. gives me something to think about - with a bit of customization that could be a possibility!

I made up a quick flyer to hand out to fellow HiLux owners. What do you think? It looks like this, i just did it quickly in word, if you think it any good, i will do one properly in photshop.

Other than that, I think that some things can be made public, like Off Topic and General Discussion area...but to get information like in Technical Section and to browse members profiles/shed and the classified section....I think you must become a member.

Unfortunately though, I can't see the flyer that John aka cr1pp5 did. John, do you mind attaching the picture of the flyer for us to view?
