Dont forget that if someone is considering joining the Hilux owners army and doing a bit or net based research they might come across this site, see all the great things about the car and its potential and sway their decision to buy one!! ;)
Should be just enough free view to entice them to join.

I think it will need to be a balance of the two extremes ie. secure enough to be away from scammers yet open enough to entice people to join.

Just a thought on the topic of 'public' - is a newhilux app on the cards in the future for the forum? Doesn't have to be too complicated, just have the same user interface and user name/password authentication?

Might be a fresh new look. Again just a thought (might be easier said than done).

keep it private, i dont want to have trolls and everything on here, then scammers will increase etc etc. quality not quantity! right now it feels like we have a good community!

Keep it private. If they are interested enough to get the info how hard is it to register and become a member? We have all taken the steps to become part of this awesome forum and share our stories so if it's good enough for us...

I know my user name hasn't been on here long and i may be speaking out of school but from what i see there is a need to screen new members some how. There has been a few dudes on here recently that aren't interested in giving to the site and are just intent on being dicks or making trouble. Should be mandatory to make an intro post cause that will weed a few out.
Longterm I don't know how you'd do it but at least you would be left with those that want to contribute and not just take.

There will always be trouble makers. There will always be the meek, that walk among us.
The best way to expose these people, is on the forum itself.
Members on forums are not stupid, and can get to the truth, soon enough.
Moderators need to leave these posts and threads up on the forum, so they stay there for everyone to see.

The original post I made was a long time ago, it was originally intended for making it so people didn't need to sign up to view the posts here, not to post publicly.

Trouble makers are identified fairly quickly here thanks to the brilliant members & mods we have here. Just don't forget to click the explanation mark on a post you don't see fit and we'll investigate it. Trouble makers are not welcome and can be easily banned from the site :)

I'm not familiar with the exclamation mark on any posts... I only see the Quote button. Am I missing something?

It's a special feature function.
