Would appreciate opinions on the kms at which the diff oils should be changed on post 2005 diesel 4x4 Hilux's

The service intervals for the diffs are at 40000kms.

Just a suggestion/tip when doing the front diff oil replacement....

I changed mine at 40,000km initially and afterwards I got the front ARB locker fixed so ARB were tha last ones to touch the filler plug.

Last week I went to replace my front diff fluid and the filler requires a 10mm allen key socket to remove it.

I thought it was in properly when it wasnt and I rounded the filler plug off. Very easily to do.

I ended up having to use a chisel which wasnt easy to loosen/remove it...bugger all room for even that.

Once removed I studied it abit on the bench and saw that the plug itself being a female allen keyed plug was full of dirt inside it which stopped me from pushing the socket all the way in.

Moral if the story, use a small screw driver and clean the insides of this plug of crap that may be there before lossening it.

Always loosen the filler plug first just in case you do stuff it up, your not left with a front diff without oil and cannot drive anywhere.

Loosen filler plug, then drop the drain plug.

3 litre something for rear diff. Castrol LSD 90 should fit. I am going to change mine soon as the LSD is locking up when turning sharp.

Buy the 1 litre oil and it should come with a tube for filling. You'll also need the usual 22mm socket or wrench to loosen the plug.

Thanks for t\expensive tips, i was thinking diffs today and plan to drain this weekend, I'm wondering if i can get fully synthetic oil for diff and what viscosity.

does it matter if you put LSD oil in a Non LSD front diff insted of buying to different types of oil?

You need to keep LSD oil for the rear diff and non-LSD oil for the front diff.

Genuine Toyota LSD Gear Oil 85w-90 GL5 for the rear and Genuine Toyota Differential Gear Oil 85w-90 GL4 for the front.

The front diff is 1.5 litres from memory so a 4 litre bottle will do 2 services.

Regarding filling it...there is no way your gonna be able to do it with the spout thats provided with the bottle, you might be able for the rear but not the front.

Go to an auto shop and buy a diff filler bottle.....its a 500ml bottle I think and theres a small handpump on top and a long pipe with a metal end on it thats bend like a hook.

remove the top of this bottle and screw it directly onto the 4 litre bottle of diff fluid, then hang the end of the pipe onto the filler hole and pump away.....yes, your arms will get tired pumping but theres no easier way other than a hydraulic filler which a dealer would have.

I just used the litre bottle tube spout to fill the rear. For the front diff I used a piece of small hose about 3 ft long that I had laying around dropped it down through the engine bay and into the diff filler, small funnel at the top. Slow running in but it gets there. Worked for me at the time.

I bought the filler bottle today.. looks like it's gonna be very handy.
Bugger me that is a big alan key to open the filler and drain!! 10mm you say max? Where you get that?

I had one in my allen key set.

id reccomend one that is mountable on a socket, will make it much easier to remove with limited space with an extension and ratchet rather than trying to lever an actual allen key itself in there.

LSD oil is required for LSD and is also perfectly fine for non LSD. Just never use non LSD oil in an LSD.

Here is the filler bottle for reference, even if you only change your diff oil every 40k this is still worth the $22 as it is very tight getting in there. I used 1.6 litres of Valvoline Duragear 75W - 85 GL4


Here is the front diff filler plug on the left hand of diff. Will need to remove wheel and use an extension bar on socket with the 10mm allan key socket (i got from Repco for about $12). Drain plug is just under this to the left, alot easier to get to.

Changed my transfer oil and rear diff today after having my transmition serviced yesterday thought it would be a good idea to have a look. I asked Toyota to do it 15000k ago at the 40,000k service but it looks like they have not bothered to do any of them at all the rear diff and transfer were very dark and smelt old. Just used castrol lsx 90 in the diff and the recommended gear oil in the transfer I forgot the name. Will have a look at the front diff tomorrow and use the same lsx90
Well worth a look for peice of mind I believe can't trust anyone to do it for you and also to make sure the breathers are doing the job.
If it wasn't for this thread I would have been looking for the front diff filler and drain for hours.

One thing to be careful of is that while Toyota change the diff oils, they seem to have a "check level only" for the gearbox oil.

My 06 got to 200,000kms before we heard a funny noise and drained it. It looked like coke or coffee.

One of our employees is an ex Toyota mechanic, so we get him to service the vehicles.

He drains all the diffs/gearbox/transfer every 40,000 kms and it keeps them all sweet.

We use Castrol in 20L drums with drum pumps on each drum so we don't contaminate the drum.

We've got 2 Patrols as well, and some of the oils are the same as for a Hilux, so the drums are the go.

The Castrol site has a lube guide which will tell you which one/how much.

So with a rear locker you no longer have to use a limited slip oil

I dont think it is a problem at all to use LSD oil in a rear locker Kyle. I could be wrong though.

I originally purchased Nulon lsd oil, but was told it wasnt the correct oil. I was advised to get Castrol EPX 80w 90. But I ended getting Nulon 80w 90 diff oil. Now Im more confused

Arb suggests to use 75w 140 for non lsd diffs. If u have their lockers installed both front and rear. I use the caltex brand. Can anyone second this?
