1KD-FTV Drive Belt replacement

Lads,

The belt automatic belt tensioner is slightly out of range and the belt is squeaking a bit so I think its time to replace the belt.

I'd like to do this myself. From the Toyota service book it looks like I have to drain the coolant & remove the fan shroud. I'm wondering is it possible to replace the belt by just removing the fan and not having to drain the system?

Eoin.

i replaced mine @100thous ks
there was nothing wrong with the old one
it's a bugger of a thing to do you need 4 hands
do it when engine is cool
you dont have to drain fluid
i think from memory i removed the air filter box for some room
cheers

Ken,

Were you able to slip the belt down over the front of the fan? Did you loosen the tensioner to make it easier to fit? I'd really like to do this myself rather then pay another 100 bucks to get it done.

Cheers,
Eoin.

the tensioner is spring loaded ok
get the old belt off but b4 u do that draw a pic of how it runs......
yes you can get the belt behind the fan blades
its just fiddly
dont do it just b4 you have to leave to go somewhere cos it takes more than 30 seconds
from memory its a 15 mm ringy that fits the tensioner bolthead
have fun

14mm ring...15mm might round it off and that may become a big job!

remember to rotate the tensioner clockwise otherwise you'll just undo the bolt.

Cheers Ken,

I'll see if I can get the belt for the weekend and give it a go.

For anyone having trouble changing the drive belt, you need to get one of these:
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/EXTRA-LONG-FLAT- ... 53e44795a3
My father in law is a mechanic at a mine that has hilux's and he has a 14/15mm long reach "flat" faced spanner like the one in the set above to put on the self tensioning pulley and pull it back.
It makes the belt change a 5 minute job by the time you fiddle around getting it over the fan.

Can someone confirm which direction the tensioner has to go. Max said clockwise, my service manual said counter clockwise. I used a flair nut spanner but it partially rounded the head trying to go counter clockwise.

Ten minutes is all you need to replace the fan belt. I made myself one of these for the job.......viewtopic.php?f=13&t=14772

Don't use an opened end spanner, you'll bugger the nut.

Does the bolt through the middle of the tensioner pulley undo? Trying to locate a noise. Managed to get the other 2 pulleys off but worried about how much pressure I'm using to crack the bolt off on the tensioner pulley. And is anyone just replacing the bearing? Or do I have to buy whole pulley? Cheers

Yes the bolt does undo, I had to cheat a little and used two spanners but eventually cracked loose. Yes bearing can be replaced but also remember someone else on here saying that one of the bearings is harder to find.

Hey guys I'm getting a squeaking noise at idle & I'm suspecting that a idler bearing is on its way out....
I replaced the timing belt around 5000kms ago & replaced the drive belt at the same time but the noise is still there.

How easy is it to replace the bearings on the idler pulleys? I was planning on backing the tensioner off to remove the belt & just pull off the 2 idler pulleys & replace those bearings first or will it be just as easy to do the last tensioner/pulley as well why I have it apart?

Does anyone have the bearing part numbers that are required for the 3 pulleys?

You will be only able to do the top two idler pulley bearings because the tensioner one had a special bearing which you can not really source. The types of bearings need to do the job should be (4x) 6302, hammer and suitable bearing driver. Took me 10mins to do the job.

The ones I replaced at work not long ago were 6301, and don't forget to get the ones with a blue seal that are high temp rated.

Yours may be a different model but either size are a common bearing so take the pulleys out and have a look first.

If you can, use a vice and a couple of sockets as a press to do the insertion nice and smoothly, some say to use locktite and others just wd40 as a lube to fit the bearings, either way I don't think they are going to fall out.

If you suspect the tentioner bearings, replace the whole tentioner as the bush that keeps it aligned properly, which also keeps the belt in the right place on the pulleys, wears too and they are not too costly.

Thanks guys. Yeah I'll start with the top 2 first & see if that fixes the squeak.

May have been wrong with the type of bearing can't find the invoice from the bearing shop. But all up it was $40 for the bearings.

Thanks for the info Max. The bolt definetely needs to be turned CLOCKWISE. My Toyota Manual says counter clockwise, which only undoes the bolt. Another good idea I found in another thread was to use a tie down to tie the bar back to the scrub bar, to hold the tensioner in place while I put the new belt on.

should I say it or shouldn't I?
it is tempting but some may see it as negative.
no I wont say it unless someone asks.
