Trans Fluid Mis Hap

Postby simonreale on Tue, 20 Jul 2010 2:40 +0000

Hey Guys,

Ive had a bit of a mis hap with my TRD.

Lastnight, I decided to throw out the old engine oil after a long trip and replace it with some fresh oil.

Well, I got underneath and got distracted and loosened the bolt for the transmission fluid sump. My old diesel hilux had the engine oil sump in the exact same spot so I didnt really look properly until it was to late. Now I only let out about 300mL, so I want to refil it back to how its meant to be. I cant see any dipsticks or anywhere to check trans fluid, and today I called toyota and they reckon I have to take it in as they have to connect it to there computer to fill up???

Is this correct or can I do it my self at home?

Thanks for the help!

Simon

Not sure on the petrol auto but the D4D has an auto dipstick in the engine bay... LHS if I remember correctly.

But many cars now are a fully sealed unit... May be a job for the Toyo techs...

I used that method at home, then had toyota check it at 10k service, they said it was perfect.
I bought a 'Tom Thumb' pump from Autobarn and the WS spec fluid from Toyota...comes in a 4 or 5 litre tin.

Good luck.

Great, thats exactly what I needed!

How much is the "tom thumb" pump? And how many litres should I need if I replaced the whole lot ? Is it 1.3L?

Pump should be around 10 bucks.
As far as how much fluid you need to put back in, I had my valvebady completely out, during this time the convertor was dropping its guts constantly, I lost around 6 litres.
So it depends what you mean when you say 'whole lot'....
