Differential Oil

Postby Gulfstream8 on Sat, 30 Jan 2010 1:31 +0000

Hello just a warning note to everyone who has a new Hilux (I am only new to this site otherwise I would have posted it earlier) I have been finding an inconsistency with Toyota placing the correct Limited Slip oil into the Limited Slip Differentials of 4X4 Hilux`s leaving the factory or more correctly they have not been installing actual LSD oil (this can happen by mistake or they are saving money and placing a standard gear oil on the front diff, transfer case and then in the rear diff).

If you are experiencing a “clunking” sound coming from your rear Limited Slip Differential after a long trip or while reversing it will be they have not installed the correct oil. It’s not a major thing and it should not cause too much damage, just simply drain out the incorrect oil and install the correct specification oil and the noise will go away. I’m not brand bias just use the recommended LS 90. My differential expert said if you are concerned and are hauling big loads you can go up to a LS 140 but please check with your preferred oil company help line.

I hope this helps you save money in the long term.

Cheers for that Gulfstream, hopefully it's a one off mistake they've made.

I will have to remember to keep an eye on (an ear out for) that. My hilux should be ready for me to pick it up in Perth in late April / early May. I then plan to do the touristy thing on the way back to the NT.

It should be drying up somewhat by then, it's been a funny old wet season this year.

Good point but mine did it from the start and after I replaced the lsd at 20000km with an air locker (open diff) it kept happenning. Toyota said it was tail shaft and greased a few times untill my warranty was about to expire at 100k so I expected it to be fixed, they pulled out the tail shaft and had to file the splines, probably 95% better, only slightly get it every now and then.

I just had an 80k service completed by Toyota. They placed non-LSD oil in the rear diff. No "clunking" but it made a horrible grinding noise when turning tight corners. They tried denying that it was possible for them to accidentally put the same oil in the back diff as they did in the front. (the ARB guy just down the road who used to work at the same Toyota service center said it was a VERY common mistake) Finally talked to someone with customer service skills at Toyota who got the oil changed ->BINGO... no more diff grinding.

Easiest to not make that mistake is what we do at work and run ls90 in both front and rear diffs. Doesn't harm the front diff and no mixups with the rear

I run the same LSD oil in the front as I do in the back also.

Just remember, If you have a locker fitted in the rear then you should go back to using non-LSD oil as it is an open diff!

Would LSD oil hurt a locker? After all it's a higher grade, better refined oil.

Can't answer but my installer labelled the diff filler so he must have had a reason for doing that. He was pretty conscious of the need for different oil and warned me of it.

I can't see LSD oil hurting an air locker. It doesn't hurt to run LSD oil in the front, which is an ordinary open diff and that's all an air locker is when it's not engaged. It'll just cost more for LSD oil ;)

running the same oil wouldn't matter, i personally run Castrol lsx9 all round with no lockers but a close friend of myn working for toyota in perth also told me that it wouldn't harm the open diff it would just cost more in the long run ;)

Spoke to ARB Artarmon and they put LSD oil in all diffs. open, LSD or lockers. That way they can never put the incorrect oil in a diff...i.e. non LSD oil in a LSD diff.

I have lockers so i just put normal 75w-90 in mine.
