DIY Tming belt service

Postby C MACO on Tue, 12 Apr 2022 11:40 +0000

Hi all,

I was doing the timing belt and water pump service on my 2014 3L Hilux. I thought that I had both timing pulleys aligned before removing the old belt. New belt installed however, when I was turning the engine by hand I was stupid and did so via the camshaft pulley similar to viewtopic.php?f=81&t=29361&p=436022#p436022
The pump pulley was still a part turn away from alignment with the crankshaft not turning more than a quarter turn in either direction so dont know how to align these again.

Is there a way I can fix this or have i busted valves etc inside the engine? Everything has been done by hand and I have not attempted to turn over via the ignition.

I think you'll be fine if you realign it and turn it again by hand. Do a full two rotations to ensure its all ok
I might be wrong.

I have tried turning again by hand however it feels like it is hung up once it reaches a certain point. I slipped the belt off and can turn the cam pulley360* just fine. Crank pulley and pump pulley however, are another story.

Crank pulley rotates between just after 12 o'clock(from the blue line) to before 3 o'clock.

Pump pulley will also stop shy of the alignment at 3 0'clock by a few teeth.

Sounds like you've lost TDC (Top Dead Centre).
Petrol or Diesel?
There is likely plenty of videos on YouTube on how to re-align TDC. If you dunno what you're doing, then I'd spend a few days watching a whole heap of them. If that doesn't help then call a mobile mechanic and have a full wallet.

Yeah Rob is correct. It might take some time finding TDC again. Just be gentle and you should be fine.

I have the 3L diesel which should have been easy but i am an idiot so...

I have scoured the internet plenty. Is there a way to do this without removing the head?

What I have tried doing is rotating the cam a tooth and seeing if the crank will move with it before moving the cam another tooth. Im not getting any further movement out of the crank outside of the 90 degrees it will go. Depending on the cam position i feel the crank either lock up or feel resistance against the cam unless i back the crank off a tad.

I dont know if this indicates anything?

Yeah problem is now finding an auto mechanic willing to fix my f up.

I cant imagine that you'd be too far off tdc

can you get the marks aligned without the belt on?

Couldnt fix it myself so took it to an engine shop. They managed to fiddle with the two pulleys getting them back in line. Only charged me for an hrs work so cant complain.

No permanent damage it seems so far.

Still works out hundreds of bucks cheaper than toyota would have charged for the same job.

Thanks all who replied
