Yep....even the mechanic had to chisel it out. Replaced with hex nut top & bottom.
I often wonder where the smart people from toyota went to.

I had to use a chisel to get the front drain plug out as well. The hex key couldn't do the job. The mechanic also couldn't get it undone and said that the chisel was his usual way of getting the drain plug undone.
Anyway....I didn't want this hassle again so, like other members here, bought new plugs from ebay seller brakepadsonline.
When I came to do the next diff service found they were the wrong size. Contacted him (John) but he wasn't interested in my plight. Reckoned he hadn't had any complaints....b/s.
So....keep away from this seller.....you'll have no end of trouble. After sales service? Ha! Customer satisfaction? Ha!

It seems to me the manual gearbox fillerplug has a sensor mounted to it (halfway up on the right side of the gearbox).
Does that sound correct of isn't that the filler hole?

As the reardiff and transfercase where quite easy to do the manual box and front diff seem @#$%^ to get to the fillerholes....

howly mc fowly, managed to get the filler plug from the front diff but the drain plug won't come lose, as if it was welded into place.

Tried till my arms hurt and used an impact wrench as well. no luck.

Checked the oil, as clean as it should be and left it for now.

The filler plug is on the left side of the gearbox the one on the right is the Rev light switch.
The drain plug try using a peace of pipe on you spinner to get more leverage.

I was in the same situation before. To avoid major drama, I paid Toyota to replace the drain plug which costed 90 dollars (not bad for a new plug and oil changed). Just remember to loosen it and re-tighten it at a lower torque (~30 lb-ft). It has been easy to remove since then.

I have always used a six point socket that has been faced off on a lathe, look at your socket and you will see a rounded edge? A grinder will do it if you haven't had too many beers! NEVER use a 12point socket.
