Preemptive Replacement

Postby taresk on Fri, 20 Apr 2018 9:54 +0000

Hi guys,

My Hilux is eleven years old now, and will reach 200,000km by mid-year. Is there anything I should be looking at replacing that might be coming to the end of it's service life, such as wheel bearings, engine pulleys etc? The sort of thing that isn't touched in regular servicing.

Everything is working fine now, I'd just rather head off any potential failures, especially as I'm planning a trip to the High Country later in the year.

I'm preparing for a Canning trip later next month and have done a lot of precautionary repairs. My Hilux is over 300,000kms and done a lot of offroad touring. All that said, I really didn't need to do anything - everything seemed fine...

If you run bigger wheels or have submerged your vehicle, you may want to do your wheel bearings. Front suspension (uca/lca) ball joints are also a wear item. Your uca/lca bushes may also be worn.

Fan belt pulleys are worth looking at. I've also picked up a new alternator and belt as dust/mud don't do good things for them.

I change my uni joints while trying to diagnose a noise in the rear end - ended up being a diff pinion shaft in my e-locker.

Apart from keeping the fluids fresh you should be fine. Like I said, I didnt need to do any of this - except the e-locker.
I might be wrong.

Get the transmission fluid changed to something like Valvoline Maxlife.

Aux cooler as you'll get the fluid hot going slow 4x4.

Serpentine belt, or take a spare.

Power steering pump or take a spare.

Water pump.

I'd also get a new battery unless you can start with the aux.

And lots of spare fuel as I don't think ULP is easy to get out there.
