Oil confusion???

Postby TasFF on Tue, 11 Jul 2017 7:01 +0000

Hi all,
Have read plenty of which oil threads to figure this out with no luck!
Plenty of suggestions on this site say to run 15w40 but these are mostly from guys in warmer climates which I am hesitant to run down here in Tassie. Current winter temps range from -5 to 15c.
My manual states 5w30, Castrol site states 15w40, Castrol NZ (closer climates to TAS) states 10w40.
Thoughts?

What does your Owner's manual say? Mine (2011 V6) says 10W-30 but use 10W-40 if towing (or other such mention of heavy loading or the like). Proper SAE oil charts show 30 weight oil only good to about 32-33degC, but most vehicle manufacturers tend to change those charts in their manuals. I suspect the reason Castrol say 15W-40 is that is what their primary product for diesels is.

Mate I've run 15W40 in my D4D for the last 100,000km without any problems, that includes overnights in the highlands with -7 in the morning. Always let it idle for a few minutes longer before driving off in Winter.

Tas, if it makes you feel more comfortable, use 10w40 or 5w40 in winter then on the summer oil change use 15w40, all are within the temperature range for Tasmanian climate. Check your owners manual for temp range and check the minimum for each grade. 10w40 is good for -17c so unless you are going to Antarctica this should be fine but 15w40 goes to -7c.
Penrite 15w50 semi synthetic oil is what I use, -20 to +40c range, good for summer and winter in Tasmania.
And as stated, always run for a few minutes before driving off.
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.
