Broken down near Orbost

Postby mauricem on Sun, 09 Jul 2017 3:20 +0000

Hey guys currently on side of road with our 05 d4d hilux. Cruising along nicely when lost all power and check engine light comes up. Limped into a safe spot and checked oil water etc. Disconnected battery for a few minutes and warning light cleared but thought it beat to wait for RACV
We've come down from the Sunny Coast and had the local tech check the vehicle out before we went . Asked about putting a catch can on but they suggested blanking plates instead which we agreed to. No idea if the blank plates could have caused a problem?
If worst case we need a tech in Orbost any suggestions or ideas appreciated

From what I've read (i.e. hearsay), a complete blank would cause the warning light to appear but only for the MY06 'Lux. 2005s should be able to achieve a full blank though you mention multiple plates, not one? I was under the impression it's just the one plate.

What month build is you 05?
2004 could fully blank without fault code/limp mode but I believe that changed sometime in 2005?
Remove blank plate or put 7mm hole in it
Install catch can as you originally requested

Thanks guys, it's an 06/05.
We've done about1500k since the plates were put in about 5 days ago, could it take that long to throw a fault?

Spoke to guys who installed blank plates, they reckon 05 lux has no egr sensor so could not be the cause. Booked in for scan in a couple of hours so will no more then

Could it be a plug that has come loose when they did the install and may not have plugged it in properly?

Any results?

Scan showed no codes as we had disconnected battery, seems to run ok, will update if it breaks down again

Removed blanking plates ,700klms on and no more dramas so far.
Will try the plates again when we are back home as fuel consumption seemed better with them in place.

Thanks for posting the outcome mate
There will be no difference in fuel economy - the egr closes with minimal throttle input. Maybe placebo effect or prevailing winds.
Experienced techs will say don't bother about blanking plates - just put a catch can in but ya gotta find things out for your self sometimes
