no oil mess when i changed my oil filter.

Postby buster308 on Tue, 08 Nov 2016 6:36 +0000

Hi all.
Today I changed engine oil and filter.
To my surprise, when i unscrewed old oil filter there was no oil dripping out. Every other time I change the filter oil leaks out and drips down the engine bay.
The engine had been cooling down for about 1.5 hours before i unscrewed the filter.
Should i be concerned?

It should have some oil in there. Oil filters have an anti drain back valve to keep the lubrication system primed.

What filter are you using?

Completely normal. The filter do not have a anti drain it's a bypass feature I'm case the oil filter becomes blocked

X2 the filter will drain if you leave it for an hour or so... that's what I do, pull the plug and wait for an hour to drain all the oil out, then do the filter

My 2003 had a hose connected under a salvage lip just below the oil filter, [it catches draining oil filter oil] have a good look, its the same as 2005-2015 models.

BUT

I have a 2012 it also has the salvage tray-lip.[same as 2003]
Toyota being the w@nkers they are didn't put a hose on it so it runs down the side of the motor.
Break your arm into 4 places & come up with a bit of ingenuity and you can get a hose on to it and drain it near the sump plug.

Guys, if you're really stuck for time punch a hole in the top of the filter with a screwdriver and wait, it will drain quickly but you still need to wait til the sump drains at least 20 minutes

Thanks for your posts.
The filter did have a little oil in there.
As mentioned in posts i did
undo the filler cap and let it sit for bit over an hour before draining oil then removing filter.
Will always do this procedure for oil changes now
Lot less oil mess.
