Air filter.... Dirty air... =

I had a friend who purchased a diesel Hilux up north WA. He had issues with fuel quality. Tried better fuel filters but gave up, mainly because fuel quality was horrible in his area. WATER? Hes an auto sparky fitter dude.

Dirty fuel causes dirty oil? Impurities...

I've been using Repco brand 15w-40 and genuine toyota filters since I bought my 2007 Hilux SR 4x4. 35,000km later and still runs like a dream.

Ok great advise. But what about the older d4d with 215,000 km? When would you go to something like penrite plus 10. I think their diesel is 15-50. My motor is quiet and dry. Does not require top ups between the 10,000 kmchanges. But I wonder if a slightly heavier oil would prevent wear. Any ideas or comments,

Great question, Synthetic v Mineral in diesels, I've read lots of peoples thoughts and opinions, everyone thinks their right in the view, but really is there an answer that is conclusive?
Be good to hear a Toyota Mechanic's opinion.
Myself, been running Castrol mineral from the get go, but always wondered about full Synthetic.

Repco brand is made by Penrite, under contract. Pretty good oil. I love Penrite products.

I agree, I usually use Penrite. One of the best oils & Aussie. Nulon is a good option also.
The 10 litre penrite diesel ones, for Hilux & Prado, I buy 15-50 get the extra 10, from Repco, as their pricing is ok on Penrite, trade price is cheaper there too. Where other brands at Repco are not really discounted for trade.

Here's your tip, 30% off Repco this weekend with racv. You won't get good oil much cheaper than that.

I find the toyota engines are very strong & tolerant to cheaper oils, & less oil changes, I have a few customers that want the cheapest minimum required oil, sometimes the leave it 20,000 or more
Hundreds of thousands of Klm's still running well. Imagine how long they will go with good oil & 5000k changes.....

You haven't done the bucket job yet for the valve clearances?
When you do this job, that will sort you out about running cheap engine oils in the 1KD-FTVs.
You want to try and get the most kms out of those buckets, that's for sure, and only good quality engine oils are going to do this.
In the end, you get what you pay for.

I have been looking at the websites for oils and Penrite , which I have used in other ute non turbo... Say do not use if you have a DPF fitted. Now my 1kd-ftv is on their list . How come they don,t know if this engine has a DPF. I sure as he'll don't. Seems they were fitted in some countries and not others.
Which brings up another question how do you know where the lux was made.

No DPF mate, and pretty sure all made in thailand

I run Penrite 10w40 in my old 2.8 with 380+km (speedo out 10% so over 400 on it)
The 15/40 and 20/40 is allways 20-30 more for a 10l
Supercheap and autobarn are Normaly $60-70 for 10l
The last number is hot viscoty and first cold

I run now castrol RX deisel and find i get best fuel economy along with BP diesel with this oil over penrite deisel oil Ive been previously using.

I have opened a few vehicles now, that have been running RX. Pretty clean up the top end, so it's a yes from me, on RX.

Well, if you happen to get a good dealership, it will be the Castrol blend, which is pretty good.

Always comes down to correct oil change times and owner understanding services as law.

I have since switched back to my regular mechanic from Toyota, he loves his penrite oil, glad I made the change back. The service department at the dealer I bought the car from uses valvoline.
My hilux runs much better now on the penrite
