Can I change the oil filter...

Postby gtsteve on Sun, 24 Jan 2016 8:10 +0000

Without changing the oil or losing oil?
Or can I change the filter first before dropping the oil, or would it make a mess?
It looks like I can, it seems that the oil is all lower down in the sump.
Probably a stupid question.

Why would you want to?? The new filter with essentially be stuffed aa soon as you start it and pump ya old oil thru it. But yes ya can change it without dropping the oil. Just let it sit for a while b4 taking it off so most of the oil has drained out of it and ya won't have much mess.

Yes you can, not sure why it would be needed.

There's a hose attachment on the bottom to catch any oil that comes out of the filter.

Ok thanks, sometimes I just feel like doing an extra filter change between the oil changes.
I know that it is probably not needed, if one is due they both are due, just a silly thought.

X2... not sure why you would either GSTEVE... it's like putting on new undies without taking a shower first... the old oil will give your filter a skid mark
Cheers Gipsy :D although I'm sure somebody will challenge that  even Einstein wasn't certain of his theories.

I personally change the oil every 5,000km and filter every 10,000.
Many others do as well.

I just change my oil filter at the same time when I change my oil. Keeps the new filter nice and clean with fresh oil running through it. Plus the filter I buy which is a Z9 costs only $9 from Super Cheap Auto.
