Shaking steering wheel under brakes

Postby gtsteve on Tue, 17 Nov 2015 2:27 +0000

I think that my front rotors are on the way out. 105,000 klm.
Usually the brake is fine, but after going down a lot of steep hills the brakes still feel fine and work ok,
but I get a shake in the steering wheel only under brakes. Towing the van or not.
Then after a few k's on the flat no more steering shake while braking.

I took a front wheel off and looked at the rotor and it looked good, and not much of a lip on the edge,
and the pads are good and wearing apparently evenly, not taking them out too really see though.
and there was no scoring or discolouration on the discs.

I am not a fast driver or a heavy braker and I use the gears on the down hills for braking too.
So being a tightarse and being told not to 'waste' (spend unnecessarily) money,
I'm thinking of letting them go until they really need attention or the pads need changing
and doing pads and rotors together.

Is there any real problem with waiting?

Pull the calipers off and make sure the slides are free - sometimes these jam up and cause chatter. But it is normally the rotors - just a good check before throwing money at it.

Thanks , I will do that, and clean them all up a bit at the same time.
But I will probably wait until I really need to fix them before getting the new aftermarket rotors,
since it is not doing any apparent harm.
