Oil Pressure - 2012 - 1KD-FTV

Postby Towelly78 on Wed, 06 Aug 2014 5:24 +0000

Hi, this is my first post. I have tried to search this site for an answer to my problem however could not find an exact answer.

I have a 2WD, 2012 Hilux with 35,000 kms on the clock. I have only just purchased the vehicle. It has full servicing history, however Penrite 5w40 semi synthetic diesel oil has been used rather than the Toyota/castrol stuff. I recently gave it an oil change, including a genuine Toyota oil filter. I asked the Toyota service department about the Penrite oil and they were happy that it exceeds requirements. Interestingly when I was asking about oil, the service manager said they use castrol magnatec. I noticed that this oil is not the recommended weight as per the hilux manual. The service manager said they use it because they can spread it across a large range of vehicles. Fair enough.

Anyway, my question relates to cold starting. I noticed, as per usual first start after the oil filter was replaced oil pressure took around 3 seconds to build. I have since noticed that it takes around 2-3 seconds for the oil pressure light to extinguish every time after cold engine starting. Is this normal? It seems like the filter drains after shutdown. I suppose it would as its upside down. I have read that there is suppose to be an anti drain valve in the filter. Is this true?

Not a massive fan of the engine running with no oil pressure. I do not rev the car when cold and the oil light remains off after initially extinguishing.

Thanks in advance,

Linton

Hi Linton, I have just bought a 2011 with 34k miles and have this very same issue. It doesn't instill much confidence but all seems to operate normally and there are no worrying noises in those 1st few seconds. I can't believe this is normal though. Did you find anything more out?

Regards,
Paul

Hi guys, I know it's an old thread, but did anyone discover why this happens ?

Mine is 2015 with 225k, and in cold mornings, it need 2-3 seconds for the light to go off.

genuine oil and filter.

thanks,

Hi guys, mine does this too and it appears to be normal. Don't sweat the engine not having sufficient oil as the galleries and components are coated with oil if you use a good quality oil. Just wait for the oil to circulate before driving off and racing the engine... allow for a warm up. I use penrite hpr diesel 15w50 with no problems. As to the viscosity, you will notice in the owner's manual that 5w40 oil is the recommended viscosity but if you check the graph 15w50 covers the expected temperature range in Australia unless you live in the deep freeze. Apparently Toyota prefers lower range because they claim it to be more fuel efficient but there's no need for it if you read their info in the manual. Different dealers use different brands of oil, some use Valvoline and put a genuine Toyota oil sticker on the windscreen... I suppose it's wherever they can get the best deal! Don't be fooled into thinking 'genuine Toyota oil' is made by Toyota, they get it from a company which produces oil to equal or better specifications to requirements. Any quality oil is fine to use, and even dealers use non Toyota branded oils. ;)

Hi guys, I am pretty sure the problem comes from de oil filter, and the anti-drain back valve.

I have just take the oil filter out , and there almost no oil in it.

cheers

In my experience anti drain back doesn't work, when doing an oil change if you wait 1 hour after pulling the plug the filter is almost dry. This way you don't spill oil all over the place when changing the filter ;)

How many km on the odometer?
Was the oil drain hole mesh clean?

I understand that 2012 models did not have the oil strainer issues because it was a result of faulty injector seals in earlier models. It was a result of blowby getting past the injector seals. It always worth checking the strainer however whenever you drop the engine oil, it's easy to see the strainer through the drain when the plug is removed. Just a good torch will reveal any carbon buildup.

220k on odo, and the pickup looks clean, also injector values are within spec ( +0.4 0.8 mm3 cold )

i ve changed the oil filter, with a MANN, and it s getting worse, now it has the light on for 3seconds, every start, if the car stand for a few hours.

Thats good its clean.
How many L oil was added?
What grade oil are you using?
What is the air temperature there?
If everything is in spec then as suggested, if the light goes out within seconds its normal

X2 what chopps said, if you used a different filter and the different result says it's the anti drain back then don't worry about it because it's normal... Heavier oil will also change the result but I don't see a problem, mine does the same with 15w50 oil and only 70k on the clock. ;)
