Looking to buy one and just seeing what people are using or have recently purchased via eBay etc and can recommend?
Not looking at spending a fortune and understand you get what you pay for.
Suggestions ?

Do You have an Android Cellular?
ThereĀ“s a thing called "Torque" - will work with almost any Bluetooth ODB II Device - available for bout 10$

Working good - a cheap approach to the problem.

I have seen these wifi ones for iPhone
Not sure how good they are though?
eBay search=
ELM327 OBD II OBD2 WiFi Car Diagnostic Wireless Scanner Tool iPhone iPad iPod OZ
But I think you also need to purchase an app to use it on the phone.
How functional or useful it would be I don't know?

I was thinking a dedicated standalone scanner would be better?
Have been looking at the Autel AL419 which aren't a fake Chinese copy like some I've seen on eBay.

The cheap stand alone devices only display error codes. You have to figure out what these codes stand for (google).
I have one, too. Cheap thing from warehouse - will work.
You can read end erase codes. Not more - but not less.

For I am in Europe it wont make sense to give you the exact part number nor where I bought the thing.

Another iPhone user here.
I use the ELM327 WiFi OBD2 module on my Hilux (Bluetooth modules don't function for iPhone). I have used a couple of Apps to read the information. Rev is fairly basic but will give you engine codes (and a brief description) and is easier to read when you are driving. DashCommand is a little more comprehensive but i didn't like the fact that you cant customise the display layout as much as i would have liked. Neither pick up all of the possible outputs, i think only the generic ones are supported.
There is a free version of Rev that will at least show if you can connect. The paid one unlocks the rest of the features.
I only really use them when im on remote trips.

I'm using a wifi obd2 scanner off eBay and dash command app on iOS. Ive tried a few apps and think dash command will do every option possible which your hilux has pids for. the only issue I have is finding the relavent hilux pids and how you actually display them. I'm not even thinking of the full function customs gauges the app is capable of displaying still learning the basics.

Recently got an OBD2 bluetooth module (ELM327) and I'm using the Torque Pro app ($5).

Works well but very very limited as to what info is displayed.

I'm thinking of doing the same. When you say it's limited, is there something missing that you were hoping to be able to see?

Heap and heaps! The options list for the displays is pretty big, but the Hilux either doesnt have it or it's not available for viewing.
I have found 5 that are somewhat useful:

Engine coolant temp in degrees
Engine load (not sure on accuracy)
Vacuum/Boost, no idea what they run as standard but I've tried all 3 modes and best I've seen is just under 12 psi.
RPM (exact)
Intake temp.

Things I would have liked:

Exhaust temp
Ambient temp
Throttle pedal position
Fuel used (accurate, not just guessing by using the user defined inputs)

I have an early '06 KUN26 1KD SR5 'Lux and cannot get a bluetooth scanner to talk to my ECU.. Any suggestions? I believe the OBDII is not "really" OBDII but MOBD or something like that.. I currently have 2 Bluetooth OBDII readers, one is ELM327 v1.5 based and the other is a Bosch based unit.. any help would be appreciated even the exact Protocol name or standard number would be a help..

My 'limited' experience.

The boss at work was running an ELM 327 bluetooth, which paired fine using the Torque app on his android tablet. We blew it up when we plugged it into a 24v truck.

I purchased the ElM 327 wifi device to pair with my iPhone. I could never get it to pair to my iPhone, iPad, or my bosses tablet which had worked with his bluetooth device. It never worked with 2 toyotas (2000, 2003) or old chooks honda (2006) ... life goes on it was like $15 off ebay.

I decided to go the whole hog, and get an Autel AL539 scanner ($200), seemed like good insurance for buying a newish second hand car, could check the VIN and so on on the scan gauge. Short and sweet, it would work with some vehicles not others. Contacted the seller off ebay, who said update the software, ended up with an expensive brick... Don't buy anything off obd_automotive on ebay. They are a Hong Kong company who say they are Australian, with an Australian warranty, which is all rubbish. Difficult to deal with!! Spoke to the techy at Autel Australia, that's what he told me. He said to raise a paypal claim. I got refunded (by paypal), but a lot of hassle and didn't achieve anything, particularly given that by the time paypal sorted it I had brought the car...

Like I said, my limited experience, but a bad run none the less.

Hello ashh

If you can afford a little more I highly recommend the Innovate LM2

You get an OBDII reader plus separate Bosch A/F ratio kit.

Don't trust any A/F readings from an OBDII reader

http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=cMmLIVsPrsk

Rocket Industries in Australia have the LM2 for only $450
