No, do not coat the Toyota gaskets. Bolts should be torque to 13Nms. Yes, replace every thing in there. Idler, timing belt, and tensioner. Camshaft seal.
The bolts that hold the water pump in place, Copper Eze the threads before assembly.
The bolts that hold the retainer in position, Locktite 263 and torqued to 10Nms.

Yep, 150,000km intervals for the timing belt assembly. I have found that the tensioners go half way through the next interval. Not worth the risk. Install a new tensioner.

Yep, you save big time by installing a new water pump at the same time. It's done and dusted, then.
With genuine parts, anything from $1,100 to $1,500. Remember, quality workmanship cost a bit more. Some people will say you don't need to do the camshaft seal, but I have seen them leak around the 200,000 to 250,000km mark. So, are you going to go back in there again, just to replace something that could of been easily replaced at the 150,000km service. It's called false economy like how most of the political class speak.

All dealers are different, as we know, but I followed this advice completely and got this quote a few months ago.

• 150,000km Service (incl. cam seal replacement at no additional cost) - $564
• Tensioner and Idler for Timing Belt, fitted - $213
• Crank Oil Seal, fitted – $112
• Water Pump, fitted - $417

I don't know how this price fairs with other quotes, but this is what I paid back in March.

What is the seal puller tool called that has the red handle in Roo's pictures?

Just rang my Toyota dealer and they can do the genuine water pump for $187. Seems too good to be true?

Also, $128 for the Gates tensioner from Repco. Does that sound right? I think I'll get in online for $98 instead...

Anybody have any recommendations for somebody to do a 150,000k timing belt, etc, at the Gold Coast, or Brisbane.

Im thinking about making a tool out of some steel tube that locks into the slots on the inside of the pulley...

I made a tool to hold the cam shaft pulley while i crack the bolt. Worked well.







I think I'll weld another brace to the other side of the tube to make it easier to handle.

Serpentine Belt

Couple of the GSIC reference's (torque settings etc).
I saved some time and elected not to remove radiator shroud etc, or cylinder head cover and associated parts.

Just give it the alloy bar a tap with a hammer. The shock will usually break the seal between the pulley and the camshaft.

I just changed everything on the front of my engine yesterday, timing belt and tensioner and the main drive belt and it's tensioner and all the idler pulleys too. Pretty easy job.
Here's a pic of the belt routing for those who didn't make a drawing or take a pic.

How critical is part B of the GSIC;
B. Make sure that the indicator mark of the tensioner is within range A, as shown in the illustration.
