The original one piece water pump had a short service life, and was superseded by the more reliable two piece pump.
The two piece can be used on earlier models that had the one piece. Nobody should be fitting the one piece any more.

The 1 piece system is crap!!!!!

Toyota water pumps leak too often, that's pretty average too! So I look for improvement.

I use GMB, it's a well known name in the auto game, made in Japan. Bursons often have them in their bursons box, bit cheaper. I can't remember one ever leaking after I have fitted GMB.

Then if your system is looked after you will never need remove the back section, which I never have if it isn't required, waste of time of a job. There is a few one piece on hiluxes but often you will b lucky.
Pull it apart & see is the way to find out.

I need to replace a one piece water pump so I'm guessing the timing belt and camshaft pulley need to be removed to access the water pump? If so what's the best way to stop camshaft from turning while loosening pulley bolt? I know if I take the rocker cover off there's a spot for a spanner on the camshaft but is there an easier way that doesn't involve removing intercooler, rocker cover? 07 D4D Hilux.

I just used the old belt wrapped around the cam pulley and a pair of vice grips to hold it tight than undid the bolt with a socket and breaker bar. If you can get a hold of a mate with a rattle gun it makes it easier. and to get the cam gear off just give it a tap around the center and it will pop straight off.

If you do it another way, make sure you don't damage the surfaces. It's soft alloy, you see.

In regards to your torque settings how or WHERE do you find this information? I'm thinking of doing the w/pump & EGR and a few other things.

Just in the middle of changing Timming Belt ,tesioner/pulley and the water pump.
I'm following this right up which is fantastic.
My only question is : when replacing the bolts do I coat them with some kind of thread lock etc. Also do I apply the Permatex Ultra Grey to both of the water pump gaskets?

GSIC does not recommend any Permatex to the gasket. I didn't and it is fine. Just make sure you carefully clean the mating surfaces. From memory, the only bolt requiring thread lock is the one (tighten with allen key) holding the idling pulley, only if you have removed that.

Hmm, in this exact situation and have requested a quote from Toyota regarding the cost of this service (plus a few other items). Quoting was apparently held back because they didn't know what I was talking about by the two-piece water pump. Service Manager I spoke with said they're all one-piece, and all water pump jobs will require removal of the timing belt.

I'll have to wait for the quote to get back to me but that's a bit strange.

You can clearly see that this genuine Toyota water pump assembly is two piece.
Yes, you do have to remove the timing belt assembly to replace the old one piece water pump assembly with the two piece water pump assembly.

Sounds about right, the stealership trying to pull the wool over and shaft you at the same time!

I had a look at the GMB water pumps the other day, as I was just curious. Bursons price to me was another $18.00 and I didn't like the gaskets. They were not pressed S/S coated rubber ones. So I am still happy to fit the genuine Toyota unit.

How about the coolant, what should be used there, genuine Toyota or a compatible after market one?

I would only use genuine coolant after what I found in my old radiator.

The waterpump in our 06 D4D needs replacing. Does anyone have an idea of what the jobs worth?
Ute has 206,000km on it now.
I checked the service records today and when the timing belt was changed @ 150k they didn't change the tensioner or idler so I'm thinking these should be done too then going by roos advice..
