I'm taking my 09 diesel in for a timing belt change soon (150,000km). I've done all my own services since 60,000km. Is there anything else that I should get the mechanic to do/check while it's in? Would checking the tappets/valve clearances checked be worthwhile?

100% do the water while you're in there. Will save a lot of heart ache doing the job once

Do the water pump if it has never been done. If it's been done in the past, no reason to re-do it.
Replace the timing belt tensioner and pulley.

You don't have to go replacing injector washers and adjusting valves just because you doing the timing belt. That's just turning a 1hr job into a 1day job for no reason.

camshaft seal won't hold too long. It should be coming with the kit.

second on the water pump. Mine failed at around 110,00km, but now I wish I'd done the timing belt then as I now have to do that soon. The light vehicle workshop foreman where I work says the hilux water pumps fail anyway btw 70,000 - 150,000km's (or similar to that from memory).

My water pump went at about 160,000km
I bought a genuine one from Toyota but the 2 piece version. I should be able to just change the front half of it next time it goes. Meaning I don't have to take the timing belt out to get at one of the bolts.
If you change it, it might be worth getting the 2 piece version.
Not everyone at Toyota knows about it, I had to get the guy to do an extra search to find it as it's a different part number (obviously)

Totally agree. The mechanic who did mine installed the 2 piece.

I can do the timing belt in an hour. It is a very simple job compared to my old 3L 2.8 diesel.

Always do the timing belt idler pull assembly at the same time as the timing belt. It adds about a half hour to the job.

Water pump assembly 2 part

Toyota product id is:
16100-69356

Water Pump : 16100-39485.
Timing Belt : 13568-39015.
Idler : 13505-67041.
Tensioner : 13540-67020.
I always replace the Idler and the Tensioner when doing this job. I have found that the Tensioners die about half way through their next journey.
I also recommend that you use the genuine Toyota timing belt. They are a quality item.
To do with the time that it takes, like, who cares, I mean really. Just do the job properly, as if you don't, you can right off the cylinder head and the block, the pistons.
Nothing like a job done right, especially this job.
The other thing that I normally do, if budget is there, is to replace the camshaft seal.
Seal, oil for camshaft : 90311-32019.
Torque settings.
Water pump : 13Nms.
Two bolts for bracket : 26Nms.
Idler bolt : 35Nms.
Tensioner bolts : 13Nms.
Camshaft pulley bolt : 96Nms.
Retainer bolts : 10Nms.
I use Locktite Grey Max if doing the water pump, for the re-sealing of the retainer.

Yep, yep, yep.
Saves you big dollars. Like about $600.00. You save on labour costs.
For those that don't change the tensioners, your mad.
They go half way through the life of the new timing belt, most of the time. Not worth the risk.
Did I say you buy the tensioners from Repco. About $28.00 cheaper, and the same part just in a Gates box.

The old water pumps like to poo themselves in between 80,000 to 180,000kms, as a general comment.
This one went on a Prado 150 at 139,000kms. My customer decided it was best to bring the replacement of the timing belt and associated components forward, in line with the water pump.



Good idea to replace the camshaft seal, as well.

No, the genuine Toyota water pumps are two piece.
That's what my customers want me to fit.
Some people fit aftermarket, I don't, at the moment.

Not all of the genuine water pumps are two piece.

My local dealer wanted to supply a one piece pump because that was the part number listed for my car (2009 D4D). The guy said that was the only pump that would fit my engine.

I spoke to the better parts guy the following week and he said the two piece was listed as an alternate part and was a good idea.
